"MAY 23, 2007 - Valve® today announced that Steam, the Bellevue, WA
based company's pioneering PC platform for digital content, has
surpassed 13 million active accounts. With over 150 games in a broad
selection of genres and dozens of other PC applications, movies, and
demos available, Steam has become a leading destination for millions
of gamers around the world."

Not too shabby for a Co that never advertises for new talent, has an old
Quake engine, is unreliable, doesn't have enough servers and could go
out of business at any moment... erm, should we believe comments in NG's
over the last year about Valve that is...

I wish Valve had stuck to Valve games and demo's. At least with Valve
you can be sure of good quality. Opposing Force and Blue Shift (which
werent done by Valve) excluded.

Impressive, even though most of them were probably created just to
play HL1 Counterstrike that was not bought through Steam. ;^P I had a
Steam account already when the only games they offered in Steam were
Half-life 1 and Project Gordon (the free HL spinoff game, 2D
platform).

Steampowered.com listed 135 games. Close enough to the alleged 150
titles, I guess. Anyway, since we are talking about numbers, by a
quick count Direct2drive.com offers 241 PC games, which don't include
any PopCap java-games either. D2D also has movies, TV shows, comics
etc., so by the numbers it is obviously much more successful than
Steam, right?

Except that the specialized format that D2D uses for games doesn't allow you
to install unofficial patches or mods, which is as dumb as a bag of rocks in
my opinion.

Is that all? Given that AFAIK there were 6 million copies of Half-Life
sold before the budget version was released, several years ago, I
thought there would be more...

Sorry to see it, but I see this as nothing more than a needless and
inflammatory post.  I think by now that Steam has been debated more than it
needs to be and that 99% of people have already decided if they consider
Steam acceptable or not.

A lot of people don't like Half Life, but people are still free to post
about it. It is on topic to discuss a delivery system for action games
in this NG.

News about a successful gaming venture is needless and inflammatory?
Are you responding to the right post?  *Mine* was needless and
inflammatory... ;-)

99% of people?  Does that figure include just the gamers that bought it
in 2004 or the new one's that are just buying it now or will buy it in
the future?  Perhaps they might want to discuss it or, God forbid,
debate it?

I didn't mean it as inflammatory in the slightest, I thought it was an
impressively large user base (more than I would have guessed) and
thought others who share my interest in Steam might also find it
interesting.
