Current / Future system specs?

Lief - 09 Apr 2007 23:47 GMT Was searching old posts and saw the system specs people were posting back in 1998, quite comical now when I see it, and funny to think I thought my p-2 266 was the ultimate :p
Anyway just wondering what peoples current system specs are, how they perform in the games they play, and also, future upgrade plans?
Pretty much just interested in the main parts of the PC, no one cares much what mouse / kb / floppies you got I think...
Anyway my current:
Mobo: ASUS AV8 Deluxe RAM: 1gb Crucial pc2700 (2x512mb) HDD: WD 80gb VGA: gainward 7800GS Display: 21inch CRT Sound: Onboard
This was an upgrade from xp2100, gf5900, a7v8x, seems to run pretty much anything I throw at it very well, and although its still an AGP system (possibly shot myself in the foot there but there were reasons), it still has about 2 years left in it I think.
I don't plan to upgrade very soon, in fact, I may not bother as no new games are really grabbing me, even WoW which seems to have gripped the world is kind of dull, maybe it just lacks substance after playing everquest for three years plus.
But if I was planning an upgrade it would likely be a core / quad cpu, pci-e, 2gb ram, 2x80gb high speed raid0 HDD and a single large HDD, I'll replace this monitor when it dies...
Oh yes, I am bored :p

> Anyway my current: > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > Display: 21inch CRT > Sound: Onboard Currently using:
Arock Conroe945G (cheap but decent board) Core 2 Duo E6600 2GB of DDR2 mem 320GB Sata2 HD 7900GT 22" widescreen Samsung 226BW Audigy2 XP Pro (added cos it'd be interesting to see if anyone has moved to Vista)
Runs everything great and won't be upgraded until I really, really, really find a DX10 game that I must have. Then I'll look at DX10 cards and Vista
Lief - 10 Apr 2007 00:32 GMT > Though your CPU might be useful... ;-) LOL!
Was looking at it thinking...something is missing...
AMD3800+ :P
Scott Richardson - 10 Apr 2007 03:31 GMT Lief: about how much would it cost to buy the components of your system (to assemble them myself)? and about how much would your dream upgrade cost? Thanks. Scott in Austin MN

OK here goes for my current system. I'll use pretty much one site only, so price may vary.
CPU: AMD3800+ £40 Mobo: ASUS AV8 Deluxe £30 RAM: 1gb Crucial pc2700 (2x512mb) £100 HDD: WD 80gb £40 VGA: gainward 7800GS £180 Display: 21inch CRT £300
Of course, you could get better memory for the same price, a large HDD for not much more, the VGA card is the best AGP card out, so it's probably better to go for a pcie mobo. And dont buy a CRT :P
and about how much would your dream upgrade
> cost? Dream upgrade? Well that would be in the thousands. Depends on how sensible the dream was I guess.

Paid £85 for mine (should be much cheaper now) and it I had it for two trouble-free years then I gave it my daughter. No sign of it quitting yet...
Agreed though - todays LCD's are great. A 21" Dell CRT is only more useful if you have no other heating in the house.

No sign of it quitting yet... Wasn't much choice on the site, personally dont think its worth buying a CRT now anyway. Got my dell 21inch crt for nowt after my 17inch died....would of gone for 19inch LCD if I didnt have this.

Andrew - 10 Apr 2007 07:02 GMT >Anyway just wondering what peoples current system specs are, how they >perform in the games they play, and also, future upgrade plans? Would like to upgrade, but can't afford to. May wait 6 months to a year for Vista and its drivers to stabilise before going multicore, DX10 and Widescreen LCD.
My 360 and Wii gets used a lot more for gaming than my PC these days, and there aren't any games on the PC that are compelling enough for my tastes to warrant an upgrade.
My current gaming PC is struggling these days on high end games:
Mobo: Asus A78N Deluxe CPU: AMD XP2800+ RAM: 2GB Crucial PC3200 GPU: NVidia 6800GS 256MB Sound: Onboard Soundstorm

I was astonished to find I didn't require an upgrade for Stalker. I want Spore, it's the only game on my radar at the minute although I'd like to take a look at Conan.
If Spore requires an upgrade then I'll make it so. Other than that my PC is a Pro Evo computer with Stalker in mind too.

My 6600gt packed up last week, so i am looking to upgrade soonish. New g/c i'm looking at is this http://tinyurl.com/yt4om4 dx10 ready and around my kinda budget.
I'm also going to get a new psu, as my current 450w struggles these days, this 580w should be ample: http://tinyurl.com/2arrzx
Oh and also another gig of ram could come in handy. :)
Civilian_Target - 10 Apr 2007 17:24 GMT Mine just about holds water for games and does the desktop stuff very nicely :)
AMD Athlon64 3500+ on Abit AN8, nForce 4 2GB decent RAM Samsung Syncmaster 17" TFT on ATI X800 120GB Windows Disk, 120GB Fedora Core 6 disk, 320GB shared FAT disk Videologic ZXR-500s on a TurtleBeach Santa Cruz soundcard Faithful old-skool MS clunky keyboard and MX700 mouse (on the contrary Lief, peripherals are the most important bit, you use them the most!) Big-old Chieftec Case, made in Texas no less :)
I'd love to pop a dual core processor in there but sadly AMD changed the socket format on me :( Need more FAT space too...

CPU: Athlon 64 3400+ Mobo: Elitegroup 755-a2 HDD: 200gigIDE (Had a 200gig SATA and 160gig SATA die within a week last month, grrrr) Memory: 2x512 meg Samsung sticks GFX: Nvidia 6600GT Display: 19" CRT Sound: can't remember, probably either a SB Audigy or a Live, I somehow seem to have ended up with about 5 different sound cards... OS: XP Home
Upgrades:
Happy with my CPU, mobo, memory & display. I would like more HDD space but there are more important concerns.
GFX: so far very little of what I play stresses it despite being 2 years old, I would like to upgrade but since my system is AGP based the move to PCIe will be a rather prohibitive one - I may well buy an off the shelf system if and when.
I am playing 90% of games on my 360 now, so I have no intention to upgrade unless I have a hardware failure, after all this system is just a little over-specced for web browsing! <G>
Peter [AGHL] - 11 Apr 2007 18:45 GMT > Anyway just wondering what peoples current system specs are, how they > perform in the games they play, and also, future upgrade plans? Current specs in this house (three PC's)
MSI K8N-NEO4-FI, nForce4, S939 MSI RX1950XT-VT2D256E, PCI-E, 256MB AMD Athlon64 4000+ SeaSonic S12 PSU, 500Watt Seagate 7200.10 250GB, 16MB, SATAII (+various disks) Kingston DDR400, 1024 MB, CAS 3 (dual) (17" CRT's)
Stalker runs very well, Dark Messiah crashes to the desktop

I have the dosh to build a big pc, but really I should spend it on better things...oh to be more exact, my missus wants to spend it on better things, apparently we dont have enough cushions...(I can still get in the front room...)

The only games I have that really need the performance boost of SLI are FEAR and Far Cry. HL2 runs great in 64 bit mode, single display acceleration, 1600x1200 all the goodies on and high.
If you get a new rig, skip the 2 gigs ram and get 4 gigs if possible. If you get an Extreme6700 Quad core, *DO* get a 64 bit OS to run on it so you can use the full 4 gigs and have an even smoother gameplay with those that run 64 bit mode. McG.
Civilian_Target - 12 Apr 2007 11:02 GMT > onboard 8 channel sound People seem to be abandoning the concept of "sound cards" now en masse. I'm quite aware that (RAM aside) I have one of the lowest specs mentioned here, but only one other has said they have a real sound card. No on board sound I've used (including nForce 4 sound on this board) has really come close to my soundcard, the connectors are usually crap to start with. Granted, at the moment I'm probably not plugged into good enough speakers to notice any real difference in sound quality from the two cards, but I find it amazing that people are willing to shed in excess of €400 on graphics without investing in decent sound!

JAB - 12 Apr 2007 11:10 GMT >> onboard 8 channel sound > [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Civilian_Target Personally I not sure I would be able to tell the difference as my preferred sound option for in game sound in a pair of headphones. There's also the matter of limited space inside your case, or on the mainboard. Most people prefer to leave at least a PCI slot gap between their graphics card and the next card along (In my case, I have 2 slots gap, because one slot is taken up by the enormous fan on my ATI X1800, and the other just to give it some breathing space) ... that leaves me with 3 other usable slots.. one of which is PCI-E only.. essentially 2 usable PCI slots

The Soundstorm on my NForce2 mobo's works great for my needs. In fact it is about the only part of my gaming system that doesn't need an upgrade, the sad part being that I will lose it when I do upgrade.

I listen to a lot of music, I watch a lot of films and I play a lot of games. On my mobo I have the ALC888 which is the 7.1ch Premium HD Audio (which sounds good if you say it fast). I used it for a month or so and then plugged the Audigy2 back in. I find the sound slightly better (I do have nice speakers) but most of all I like all the options that can be had through the software that was missing with the onboard.
All a bit academic really - didn't they break the software for Creative cards in Vista? Or am I remembering wrong? If so it means that early next year my nice Audigy will be useless.
Civilian_Target - 12 Apr 2007 20:14 GMT > All a bit academic really - didn't they break the software for Creative > cards in Vista? Or am I remembering wrong? If so it means that early > next year my nice Audigy will be useless. Yeah, same the TBSC is ooold and not supported under Vista either. But XP's around for a few years yet I'd say! On the big system I have at home I can hear a clear difference between the output of the onboard nForce4 audio (7.1 something blah) and the TBSC, it's just a lot cleaner and clearer, and the EQ is rather nice too! Plus it supports A3D audio which is a nice bonus for Half-Life 1 mods :)

Yes I have, many times and no, it's not. It isn't quite a threshold shift, and there has been a tad of improvement since I've been off work 8 months now. Can't say the same about my knees, lumbar spine, feet and a few other odds n ends :)

You moved out of the compound? Got a nice view? Where are you now, and what will you do without all the security? Ah, forget I asked.. just get bigger guns for each room :)
Hope you and Lady Fodder are enjoying all the extra work...

More kids or more wives on the way? Either way good luck. :-)

Yaknow, I *LIKE* the Cruzan dark. The older the better! Thing is, me BP meds don't seem to care for alcohol at all. Sigh. I still have my Sport Menthol Light 100's... but about 1/3 as much as I used to. McG.
G Hardy - 14 Apr 2007 12:53 GMT > Was searching old posts and saw the system specs people were posting back > in [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Anyway just wondering what peoples current system specs are, how they > perform in the games they play, and also, future upgrade plans? For play: CPU: Intel P4 3.2GHz HT 800MHz FSB Mobo: ASrock 774 dual VSTA (SATA+IDE & AGP+PCIe) RAM: 2gb Kingston pc5300 (2x1024mb) HDD: Gawd only knows 300GB I think, partitioned three ways VGA: ATI Radeon x1300pro Display: 21" + 15" CRTs Sound: Onboard
I got the CPU by accident, and it was sitting on a shelf for a few months before I finally got around to doing something with it. I knew it needed a new mobo, so I got one that would support PCIe and SATA "futureproofing"
Once I started building it, though, I thought it would be a shame to spoil an existing PC (I was going to cannibalise half its memory) and cause the new PC to be less than it's capable of, so I bought new memory for it. I figured I may as well go the whole hog and bought a PCIe card for it, too, rather than one of the three AGP cards I have in my spares drawer. I stopped short of SATA drives, though. The benefit over IDE isn't THAT huge, I understand IDE and I have several spare drives.
I'll eventually go for SATA and a better graphics card, but the next purchase I'll be looking at realistically is a bigger, quieter PSU.
I also need a new laptop for the missus - much better than the one I have now, but I may bung that in a separate thread...
