Half-Life 2 Surfing on Objects?

I did a google for a fastest run through of Half-Life 2. One that I found on
YouTube was the guy seemed to be surfing on objects. I am assuming this is
exploiting a glitch, but how do you do it? Or was it fixed in a later patch?

Here's the video (1 hour 42 minutes long, but it shows the "surfing" near
the beginning)

Thanks.

Looks like fly mode to me.

Looks like they're just "bunny hopping" or are you talking about
something else?.

No, he jumps out into space above a street with a paint-can or something
beneath him - wierd...

For those wondering exactly what bit he's on about, it's at 4:30 into
the video. No idea what's going on there, but I might give it a go and
see what's what...

I seem to remember PC Gamer (UK) giving details about this in a HL2 exploits
article a long time ago. I tried at the time and could never get it to work,
but it's something like you stand on an object, try to pick it up, and then
keep jumping. That's all I can remember though.

Yeah, that looks exactly like how he gets it started. Although it drops
away, I think, and he carries on - after which there's a bit where the map
gets a bit screwed looking and then sorts itself.

My only thought is that he has a macro programmed to cycle two or three
commands repeatedly, allowing him to fly like that. Perhaps pickup, jump,
drop, jump, pickup, jump, drop, jump ... etc etc etc or whatever it takes to
do that because you see the object shaking. Plus bumping the object on top
of an NPC's head jumps them to their next action point.

Witchcraft.

It's described in better detail at speeddemosarchive.com, which lists
each glitch used within the game.  I haven't done it myself, but I
think it involves rapidly jumping on an item that you rapidly
pickup/drop.

Basically, it's an incomplete physics implementation - for every
action, there should be an equal and opposite reaction.  However,
fixing this would probably break the game.

This reminds me off a rather crazy experience I had during HL2 modding a
couple of years ago
I have uploaded the darn thing to youtube
