Everyone needs a new challenge occasionally...

May be the gains are that he is getting a new PC which will come with
Vista pre-installed, and just wants his old games to work?

Just a thought..

I just like the challenge of a new operating system and all the joys and
sorrows of trying to make it work to my likeing, sorta like getting a new
computer.

Vista isn't a "new operating system".  It's just XP with more eye candy
and more bloat.

If you really mean what you say above, why aren't you using Linux?

Used multi flavors of Linux for many years, got fed up with the constant
changes and lack of support for my hardware. Also got fed up with the
command line scenario, If I loved the command line so much I would have
stuck with Dos 6.22.
Got tired of editing all the files just to make it half useable .
At 73 years old I just don't need that hassle anymore. I'll leave for you
young fellows.

That is a good description of Windows Vista.

I would seriously not recommend putting Vista on anything but the newest
hardware, and even then I doubt it will work very well, due to lack of
drivers and memory usage off the charts for no good reason.

I tend to agree on this one

Vista is a bit bitchy and grabs approx 20% of your horsepower for just
sitting there doing nothing

I'll bet the hardware support in a recent Linux distro is as good or
better than Vista...  Also the command line is not a requirement at all.
Sounds like Linux has changed a lot since you last looked at it.  The GUI
is much better than any Windoze ever was.

Editing files is not required.

OK, I d/led Ubuntu Standalone and burned to CD last night, Will run it on my
secondary PC and see what it does and looks like now, Maybe I'll like it or
Not but it's worth a shot.

I think that depends on the flavour you choose. I've tried Debian,
Ubuntu and Mandrake on my machine in the last 18 months and each got
dismissed for one reason or another (Wouldn't sit happily with Windows,
lack of hardware support, outright crap) but I got a copy of Fedora RC6
a few weeks back, installed it and its beautiful. Unlike any OS I've
ever used, with the exception of power management it supported all my
kit out of the box, anything I needed to install has been as simple as
downloading it and running Yum on the file to integrate it into the OS
and it's very usable too. (Of course, the fact that I do know my Linux
commandline helps in a pinch :) )

Try an easy Linux, you may well be surprised.

From the 33 people that contributed to a thread in AGHL a few years ago
the average age of the posters to the group is 51yrs old.  Be
interesting to see what it is in csipga wouldn't it?  I'm guessing
considerably lower given some of the posts in there...

Thanks, I really enjoy playing Half-Life 1 and 2 and all the mods available,
I may not be as fast as the young ones but if the game lasts longer thats a
plus for me.
Yes  I still build my own systems and build and repair them for Friends, It
keeps the mind young and active.

Long live the P51D, The best and nicest fighter that ever flew.
