Play Steam games with no network doesn't work :-(

I have no X in the "Don't store profile info on this machine"

Still, when my network is down (error at my ISP), OR when Steam is
down (like earlier during the storm in the US) Steam games won't start

This makes me very nervous. When I bought games on Steam I read that
the games could be played without network connection using the cached
account info on my machine. But this never works :-(

So what if Steam disappears, or I move a place with no network?

Why doesn't offline play work as it should?  Will it be fixed?

Must be a recent development. I play offline against bots about once a week,
and I still have the old-style (green) radar - that's how long it is since I
last connected!

I may be missing the point, but when I remove the network cable from the
router, and then load Steam or the game you wish to play, it plays off line.
If the cable is connected, it wants to play online.

Aha, so when Steam servers where down it still wouldn't play offline
because it DID detect a network. Maybe a small fix here then to make
it play offline ANYTIME it cannot contact the Steam servers (even if
there is a network). That would work much better I think (no need to
unplug the network if Steam is down or my cable-connection is down).

I guess, the problem today was that my ISP was down, BUT my router was
online with it's build in DNS server. So then Steam would not go
offline (it did see a network and a DNS server, right :-)

Once its all up and working exit Steam and then block it in your
firewall.  When you restart Steam and it can't see a connection it
'should' ask if you want to play in offline mode.  No guarantees (I
haven't tried it) but I can't see why it wouldn't work and you may find
it easier than pulling cables out.

Nope, that doesn't work - Steam can tell whether or not there's a
connection regardless of its status in the firewall.

If its blocked it shouldn't see any connection... clever little bitch
ain't she?
