Looks to be a new type of multiplayer experience (and one that even I'm
intersted in).

I must confess that I never heard about it... but my source of
information is exculsively the mainstream media and the Steam ads.

The question in the "crossplayer" is: what is the ratio between single
player and multiplayer. I prefer my game to be mostly singleplayer with
little incorporations of multiplayer elements.

Some people's take on it is that it would be more like a single player
game, but with actual people controlling some of the baddies and allies
instead of just you fighting with and against a bunch of AI. That's what
I'm hoping for. Deathmatch bores me shitless, and I find team-based
multiplayer only slightly less dull.

Er, and um, nobody really knows for sure what "crossplayer" is just yet,
since that teaser is all that's available ATM.

I'm struggling to imagine what "crossplayer" might be.  I guess it must
be somehow different to the kind of single-meets-multi-player games we
have at the moment, eg, Co-op games, MMORPGs, etc

is it some sort of multiplayer game where you can avoid being shot by
other players, but with player-player interaction nonetheless.. maybe
the presence of other players can help or hinder your progress in the
game (Similar to MMORPGs in PvE mode).. or is it a storyline-driven
deathmatch mode where players are competing with each another to
complete the same objectives (Or possibly different objectives..?)
.. or maybe something else entirely? :-)

Maybe close :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay
Cosplay (????, kosupure?), a contraction (or portmanteau) of the English
words "costume" and "play", is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as
characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less
commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese
pop music bands. However, in some circles, "cosplay" has been expanded to
mean simply wearing a costume.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossplay
Crossplay is cosplay in which the person dresses up as a character of the
opposite gender.

hmmm - sounds a bit weird :)
But I am quite sure that the term "Crossplayer" is not a name Valve have
chosen out of the blue

Gameplay mighe have been inspired by a HL2 modification called "The Ship"?
