I just loaded hl on win xp and the game does not run due to compatibility
issues. Is there a patch for this and where can I find it?

Thanks

You should either install Steam from http://www.steampowered.com and use
that for half-life, or do a google search for the final non-steam HL
patch, version 1.1.1.0

If you install Steam, make sure you record your username & password
somewhere safe, since your CD Key will become permanently bound to your
account.
