As Lief says try Quake 4 or (now from Steam) COD2. If you just like
shooting with no real story then Painkiller is a lot of fun

it is too short on easy difficulty levels but you play it on Veteran

Of a sort... much better than Q2 though along similar lines. Wot it
'HAS' got is NPC's that are actually useful and fight with you instead
