If you're aware of, or have experienced this crash in HL2 and/or Ep1,
you might
want to give this petition a look and sign it:

I had this problem, added more RAM and it went away.
The console lists two config files that HL2-EP1 can not update.
Some one on the Valve forums listed possible fixes.
Check it out

LOL, lucky you. There's a bunch of people who've thrown hardware at
this problem, or already have top-of-the-line pc's, and still have it.
The goal here is to get _Valve_ to fix it once and for all, not leave
the community with a mish-mash of dozens of possibilities that may or
may not work.

The solution might be closer than you think thanks to the community

I know, I know this fix is for HL1, but ... you know :)

I'm still getting the cfg file error but I was able to finish the game. So,
In my mind, the two are probably not related. I am betting the extra memory
did the trick.
Good luck.
