Sorry to say but this changed slightly ...
Access to Valve's back catalog for free after registering a previously owned
copy of Half-Life has been discontinued
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life:_Blue_Shift
On August 24, 2005, Blue Shift became available for download via the Steam
content delivery program. Anyone who owned an old copy of Half-Life, or the
Half-Life 2 silver or gold packages (thus, having access to the back
catalog) could download it for free. Since then, access to Valve's back
catalog for free after registering a previously owned copy of Half-Life has
been discontinued, and Blue Shift must now be bought either alone, as part
of the Half-Life 1 Anthology, or as part of the Valve Complete Pack. The
High Definition Pack is also available via Steam.

...maybe your key is a 'generations' key (if there is such a thing) so
you'll have access to all three with the one key. Just a guess - I have
Generations but it's lived in the attic since Steam came out and I
wouldn't know where to begin looking. Try Steam. If you don't like it
you can uninstall it BUT remember the sign-on and password you choose -
your half-life game will be tied to that Steam account.

oh, sorry, I didn't realise that. I have access to Blue shift, even
though I've never bought it, I had assumed it was to do with the various
CD Key/confusion issues of Valve having lost track of all the different
keys which Sierra had given out. (eg, at one point, it was possible to
auth on WON servers for HL using a Blue shift CD key typed in reverse)
In which case, that's odd that the generations pack didn't come with a
CD Key, unless its another instance of keys being doubled up.
To the OP: have you actually tried it?

Looks like it's working like a charm despite the article I linked to

I’m not really sure what’s going on because it isn’t very clear.
Go here: www.steampowered.com
Download and install Steam, register an account, then find the button
that says something similar to "Activate a product I already own"
and it will just ask you to put in CD keys, then you get the latest
updates of everything and it should all work fine
