Hi folks. I don't know if i'm in the right group or not, but I'll ask
anyway.

I just bought Half-Life Generation pack. This consists of Half-Life,
Opposing Force, Counter-Strike and BlueShift.

Half-Life and Opposing-Force work straight up, no problems even with
the HD add-on that comes with Blue-Shift. Although I can only use
OpenGL for decent graphics that isn't the problem.

I managed to install Blue-Shift without a hitch. I don't know if it
requires a CD-Key or not as the only two keys that I have are for
Half-Life and Opposing-Force. When I click to load the game it loads a
black screen for a couple of seconds, returns to desktop for another
couple of seconds, then back to the black screen for another couple of
seconds before finally returning to desktop.

The game won't load.

My computer is powerful enough to run the games at decent resolution.
I haven't got a clue why it won't load. Obviously I'm running WinXP
which it says on the case the game will run under including
Win95/98/2k/ME.

I haven't tried running it under compatibility mode, but does any of
you have any idea why it isn't loading and how I can get it to load?

Got broadband?  Thought about using it through Steam?  Install Steam from..

http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php

..and then on the front page (Store) at the bottom left choose 'activate
a product on Steam'.  Put the CD key in for HL and you'll get access to
several games including (IIRC) Blue Shift.  These games will have the
latest patches so should all run fine.

The one for Half-Life gives you access to all HL1 content, including
OpFor and BS

Sorry to say but this changed slightly ...

Access to Valve's back catalog for free after registering a previously owned
copy of Half-Life has been discontinued
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life:_Blue_Shift

On August 24, 2005, Blue Shift became available for download via the Steam
content delivery program. Anyone who owned an old copy of Half-Life, or the
Half-Life 2 silver or gold packages (thus, having access to the back
catalog) could download it for free. Since then, access to Valve's back
catalog for free after registering a previously owned copy of Half-Life has
been discontinued, and Blue Shift must now be bought either alone, as part
of the Half-Life 1 Anthology, or as part of the Valve Complete Pack. The
High Definition Pack is also available via Steam.

...maybe your key is a 'generations' key (if there is such a thing) so
you'll have access to all three with the one key.  Just a guess - I have
Generations but it's lived in the attic since Steam came out and I
wouldn't know where to begin looking.  Try Steam.  If you don't like it
you can uninstall it BUT remember the sign-on and password you choose -
your half-life game will be tied to that Steam account.

First, make sure Steam is running, then
Start/Run type (or copy/paste): steam://installaddon/halflifehd
to uninstall: steam://removeaddon/halflifehd

steampowered.com has the entire article here:

oh, sorry, I didn't realise that.   I have access to Blue shift, even
though I've never bought it, I had assumed it was to do with the various
CD Key/confusion issues of Valve having lost track of all the different
keys which Sierra had given out.  (eg, at one point, it was possible to
auth on WON servers for HL using a Blue shift CD key typed in reverse)

In which case, that's odd that the generations pack didn't come with a
CD Key, unless its another instance of keys being doubled up.

To the OP: have you actually tried it?

HL2)

Looks like it's working like a charm despite the article I linked to

I’m not really sure what’s going on because it isn’t very clear.

Go here: www.steampowered.com

Download and install Steam, register an account, then find the button
that says something similar to "Activate a product I already own"
and it will just ask you to put in CD keys, then you get the latest
updates of everything and it should all work fine

Not sure I can help you here ... I never got the generations pack but I
kinder assumed that each game had it's own CD key. Have you tried
getting the latest updates for it and HL1?

Should really pull myself together and dig up that old, old generattions
package I bought decades ago
Why bother when you have Steam :)

Anyways IIRC you should have a CD key for BlueShift
In the package you should also have a piece telling you in what order you
install the games and various patches
Same paper states that if you fail to install everything in the right order
some of the games does not work

BS is very special as this is the only game where the developer(Valve?)
added a kind of copy protection to the map files, actually the mapfile
format and some binaries were altered slightly

The first versions of Steam did not include BS and the word was that it
would never be included (too difficult)
Did Valve ever sort this out or?

hmm Google to the rescue ....

i just checked the game manual. all it says about installation is two
seperate instructions that are almost identicle. the first one says to
install HL insert cd and wait for the autoplay feature and follow the
onscreen instructions. if autoplay doesn't load then type autorun.exe
in the run command. to install OpFor make sure HL is installed and
insert the cd and the same process. for BS it says the same as HL
