You're facing one of the coolest puzzles in HL - easiest thing to do is take the crowbar (yes, really) and run at the goddamn pecking giraffe. If you move fast enough, you can get it right between the eyes, which should stun it long enough for you to get to the door. This is in the original Half Life, right ? If you pop a grenade in the hole where the thing comes out of the ground it seems to stun it just about long enough for you to get to the next door, if you are real quick. Then there is a long section of exploring before you can work all the switches so you can go back and fire the rocket motor, which actually kills it.
