Any playing this updated version?  Just downloading the demo through
Steam now.  Most folk seem to think it's great but doesn't have a great
deal of depth.  It's longevity will depend on how well it's supported
update-wise I guess..

I like it. It needs a little more polishing (particularly with
improvements to the server browser) but it'll still quite varied in
gameplay. Depth does exist; I'm still learning the tactics necessary to
avoid staying in negative scores, heh.

..been playing most of the night (half of that was the tutorial).  AI
beats me every time so don't know when I'll try real folk...

...and you're right it does have some depth.  How many months worth I
don't know but for $15 I'm certainly considering putting the cash down.

Have you tried the strategy that the tutorial encourages?  Something
like "wait until the enemy uses all his nukes, and only then attack"?
I did it today and it worked like a charm against the AI.  I'm not
entirely sure why that works.  Seems counterintuitive to me.

I've only played a few games at this point.  It seems to me that the
the defenses aren't bad.  Like the tutorial says, put most of your
silos (ABMs) near your major population areas and abandon your boonies.

Heh. Don't expect the AI to behave like an experienced human player;
humans are somewhat superior in this game (for the most part).

That tactic you quoted from the tutorial needs a little extending
though, since it's not a hard and fast rule. Most people have learnt by
now it's a good idea to stick a whole bunch of silos next to each other
and launch them at the same time to achieve maximum success. What I have
also noticed is that this makes for a really good time to launch your
OWN nukes at surrounding cities, as the silos will be in launch mode
instead of air defence, so you'll have a really good chance at making
some choice kills. Hence you don't have to wait for the enemy to have
used up all their nukes before launching your own, but it's useful to
have a few left over once the victory timer begins.

Fraid you guys are way ahead of me... I only get to play at weekends and
'maybe' 1/2hr some nights.  Keep posting strategy tho'.... I appreciate
the tips.  If I do find I like it I'll maybe see you online someday.

That's one thing 'ole Shawk's got on most of us here. A life! ;-) Just
kidding, I'm sure most of us lead reasonably normal lives.

Someday we'll look back on all this and plough into a parked car.

There's an open source version available freely somewhere on the net, and
it's rumoured that M$ are working on one but it'll probably be buggy.

Be warned though - serious compatibility issues with apps like Wife and
Girlfriend - rumours of BSODs abound.

This aint reasonably normal, this is (currently) bloody manic!!

Mine was from Digitalo but I can't recommend it.  It's ambitious but
cliched, not quite put together that well, crashes when you least expect
it and buggy as Fu$k! ... hang on... or was that Devastation?

Anyone remember that ... one of those 'could have been a classic if
they'd finished it' games?

I was so disappointed with that game. I remember really looking
forward to it too.

It had jarringly stupid AI that just stood there until you either shot
at it or were close enough to it to "trigger" it. Sometimes you could
just shoot the AI and it wouldn't react at all.

Yup.  Still on the shelf here.  I did finish it (it was back in the days
when I absolutely 'had' to finish every game no matter what).  One of
the first with physics etc... showed promise but was so badly let
down... pity.

Worth playing through the tutorial if nothing else...

PC Gamer's review stated that the AI was only good for practicing against
and wasn't good enough to provide a real challenge once you'd learnt the
game. Which is a shame, as I'd much rather play a game like this
single-player than multi-player (don't have enough time to commit to playing
games like this to their conclusion).

Does anyone have any experience with how accurate their description is?

The conclusion is very quick 20 mins or so ...

My conclusion is that PC Gamer (and JAB) must be bloody good at this
type of game.  AI is challenging me ATM.  But then I can't really claim
to have yet 'learned' the game.

Oh not me ... I get my arse kicked by the AI and online!

At least I know I'm not alone then. :)

I'm getting better now I'm understanding the tactics more ... even a
full scale launch against an in defence attack has little chance of
success, subs are great but make sure they have some fleet protection
before they launch, etc. but still haven't got to the stage were I can
beat the AI and online I'm just happy not to get a negative score!

I was disapointed to see that i couldn't turn the sand in the middle east
into glass. No Beruit on the map! Or any of the other shithole muslim
countries bigger cities for that matter.

I did not like Darwinia (strategy games are not my cup of tea), so I
reasoned I would not like Defcon either. Amen to that.

I normally don't either but Darwinia was a surprise in that I really
enjoyed it - hence my trying (as so far), liking defcon
