Hi

Just looking at upgrading my 19" crt monitor.  The colours sometimes
flickers so its only a matter of time before it breaks.

Been looking online and have saw some great 19" and 20" widescreen TFT
monitors.

They all seems to use 1400 by #### resolution.  Anyone have one and
used it for halflife 2 and other games?  I'm just wondering what it
looks like?  Are games stretched or is directx clever enough to show
more of the screen in the normal sizes?

Thanks.

Rich

That is typically dictated by the monitor. Keep in mind a few things.

(1) Not all games support widescreen, Battlefield 2 being one of them
surprisingly. But most new games do.

(2) Older video cards may not support those resolutions natively, it may
require a special program like powerstrip. Pretty much all current gen cards
(i.e. 7xxx series nVidia and X1k series ATI) do.

(3) Widescreen monitors allow you to either stretch the image if it is not
16:9 or 16:10, or you can have it at its actual aspect (i.e. 1024x768 or 4:3
aspect) showing black bars on left and right.

(4) To get an equivalent 1600x1200 monitor in widescreen (1680x1050) you
need to get a 20" or bigger. Dell sells their 2007FPW fairly inexpensively.
I have both a Dell 2001FP (1600x1200 - 4:3) and a 2001FPW (1680x1050 -
16:10) and both are spectacular monitors with lots of inputs. Otherwise 19"
and 17" LCD's are typically 1440x900.

Hope this helps.

I just recently bought a Samsung 215tw 21" model for $479 at my local Fry's.
See NewEgg's listing here:

Absolutely fantastic monitor, IMHO. So far I've played HL2 Episode 1, UT,
UT2K4, Tribes Vengeance, and FarCry w/no problems. It has tilt/height adj,
screen swivel to portrait mode, PIP, component/composite/S-video/DVI/Analog
RGB inputs, and a native res of 1680x1050. 1000:1 contrast ratio and 8ms.
Supports HDCP and comes with a DVI cable. All I'd change on it if I could
was delete the very narrow and barely noticeable speaker bar at the bottom
edge. O dead pixels and my extended warranty will guarantee replacement if
any turn up in 5 yrs! I also got a free Canon PIXMA iP1700 printer
w/purchase...

My system specs:
Windows XP SP2
DFI LanParty UT nF3 250Gb
AMD64 3200+ Newcastle CG
2X512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200
BFG GeForce 6600GT OC AGP 8X w/128MB DDR3
ForceWare 91.31
Creative Labs Audigy2 ZS
2X60GB Maxtor SATA HD RAID
Artec DVD/CDRW 52X
Ultra ULT-31646 500W w/CPS
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 Aircooled
Samsung 215tw 21" LCD
Saitek Eclipse KB
Saitek Gamer's Mouse
Logitech X-230
Opti-UPS GS1100B

(adding Seagate 400GB SATA internal today!)

I got a Sceptre X9W monitor at Newegg for a couple of hundred bucks.
Thing works great. Have a 6600GT card, and HL2 runs well at 1400 x 900
with the card. The additional viewing area adds a lot to any gaming
experience. Call of Duty 2 and Nascar Racing 2003 Season also are both
great.

Now that I have a widescreen monitor for gaming, I will never go back!
