Just starting the original Half Life Game, actually my first try at a
FPS game.
I'm using a P2900 Saitek for a controller, Is this the best control or
should I be trying a joy stick type controller for half life.
I seem to have a hard time aming and shooting, plus control is very
sensitive or is just that I have a lot to learn ?? LOL

That device seems to be for a PC - so you should bin it as far as HL
is concerned and go with the keyboard/mouse combo.

Joysticks & Gaming pads are a really bad choice for any FPS game IMO.
the majority of FPS gamers use a mouse to aim the crosshair and shoot,
whilst using the keyboard for movement (the default keys are WSAD for
movement, then R to reload, E to 'use' items such as doors & HEV
chargers, etc). The reason is that joypads and gamepads are just too
imprecise and clunky for any sort of accurate aiming
If you've never used the keyboard/mouse combo before then it will take a
bit of getting used to, but it will pay off if you just persevere for a
while :)

I'm in agreement with the other two: FPS games and joysticks/control
pads don't mix. As natural as it feels using a controller for GTA or
most console games, I always use a mouse and keyboard for FPS games.
This is why FPS games shouldn't be on consoles (and thus I only buy FPS
games for PC):
* there isn't always support for a mouse and keyboard in console FPS games
* if there is support for mouse/keyboard, they're usually quite pricey
for good quality ones, since it's a very small niche market
(mouse/keyboard, that is. Oddly enough, FPS games themselves sell well
for consoles).
* the graphics are going to be tons better on the PC version of any FPS
that is also available for a console.

* Usually multiplayer on a console is usually much more limited than on
a PC ... Most, I imagine, don't allow online play at all. and those
which do probably don't have any way of installing mods, patches, etc.
