You could try deleting the clientregistry.blob file, the files in the
steam\cfg folder, and also the config files in the actual game
folders, or just temporarily moving them elsewhere.
I have always had problems with the in-game server browser not
remembering favourite servers, and since the last update, the
game/players/ping columns are always squashed to the right - very
annoying!
The only cure I have found for the above, is not to use the in-game
browser, but the one in the steam interface.
Aren't computers fun!?

I noticed today that the Steam client launch and 'desktop' server list
worked fine. Even remembered the server history. It also use my new vid
settings fine. I'll try the .blob and \cfg deletes ...

Me too, i think the server browser is just really buggy. I use my
registered copy of All Seeing Eye instead :)
