Hi there,

I am a casual player of Half Life 2 Deathmatch for the past 2 years.
Only a few days ago I bought I gaming mouse, Logitech MX510. I tried to
play with it just as with the usual 3-button mouse, and I did not feel
how my game could be improved with the gaming mouse.

I use my right hand with the WSAD buttons to move, and to switch
weapons. I use my left hand with the mouse with 2 buttons to aim and to
fire. I wish I could incorporate easy switching of the weapons into the
mouse buttons (e.g. one-button push to bring up magnum or the grav gun
for grenade throw), but none of them seems comfortable to me. Perhaps,
I should switch to using the mouse with my right hand, and make the
movements forward-sideways by pressing the buttons (arrows ?) with my
left hand.

I tried to find on the Internet the sample configurations of binding
the buttons to the mouse buttons, but I was unable to. This probably
mean that everyone assigns only one (not many) functions to the mouse
extra buttons (everyone assigns different functions of their own
interest), and it does not work well either. Can anybody suggest the
configuration and the rationale behind of it ? Thanks.

Hey I'll bite. I've never owned or even used any gaming mice, but IF I
did, I imagine that I'd assign one of the buttons on my thumb side
(assuming you hold it with your right hand) to a grenade. On my wheel
mouse, I have the wheel assigned to cycle through the different weapons,
and after a bit, you get a really good feel for how far to flick it and
it becomes arguably the fastest way to switch between your favorite
armaments. I use "Q" a lot when I'm playing too, to switch to the
previous weapon, so maybe you could use that for the other button on the
thumb side. I dunno, it really is personal preference as to what to set
the buttons to. I myself can't really think of anything that a mouse
button could do faster/better/quicker than a keyboard shortcut, that's
why I don't have a gaming mouse. :-D To each his/her own though.

Hope that shed some light for ya,
Acercanto

Thanks for your reply. However, in my experience, the people who do not
use gaming mouse cannot comment on the usefulness or uselessness of
buttons.

I've got an MX1000, it has effectively 10 buttons and I use them all.  I
use the scroll wheel to go through weapons, there is a scroll right and
left function that I often use for lean left and lean right, or to
toggle between targets.  I use my middle thumb button for "use", the far
thumb button usually for "grenade" and the close thumb button, in HL2,
for the Gravity Gun.  I use the cruise up and cruise down buttons for
"suit zoom" and "flashlight".
I customize my buttons individually for every game I play but I
definitely use all of them.  In games like Doom 3 and Quake 4, I have
just about all of my extra mouse buttons bound to different weapons.

If you're using a logitech gaming mouse, go to www.logigamer.com and
check out the forums to get the most out of it.

Wow, I don't think I could get the hang of all those..

Whatever floats your boat, man.

Trust me, when you get used to it, they're indispensable.  The fact that
the mice these days are so well designed means that using the extra
buttons isn't ungainly, I'd be happy with more buttons.  I could
definitely handle more than the three thumb buttons, which is really
just one button that can be clicked three ways.  They could attach two
more click options and I'd be happy.  Think about how many buttons you
have access to with your left hand on your keyboard, over 40.  That
makes the 10 on my mouse seem paltry.

Hmm... It looks to me that everyone is using his gaming mouse with his
right hand (with the left hand working on the keyboard). My current
scheme is opposite. It is to use the right hand on the keyboard for the
movements, and the left hand on the ordinary mouse for aiming/firing.
But, in this scheme, I cannot use the extra-buttons on the mouse. So,
the challenge for me is to switch the mouse from the left hand to
theright hand.

At least this is what I now know about using the gaming mouse...

You can also get ambidextrous mice which are just symmetrical, so should
feel just as comfortable in either hand :)   The razer copperhead is one
of these, although after the trouble i've had with the firmware for that
mouse, i'm a bit loathed to reccomend it to anyone.
