I'm new to the world of Half Life. I bought the Half Life Anthology
new for $7.50, and I haven't opened it yet. I searched on Google and
found comments that the Platinum edition was better because it doesn't
use Steam and includes Counter-Strike. Since I also bought Half Life
2, I'm going to have to use Steam anyway, so the real issue to me is
Counter-Strike. I wonder why did Valve left it out of the Anthology.
I read on at least one site (Planet Half Life) that Counter-Strike is
available as a free download to owners of Half Life. If I open and
install the Half Life Anthology with Steam, I should qualify as an
owner of Half Life, so will I be able to download Counter-Strike for
free somehow or does it have to be purchased over Steam?
The posts I've been reading on this subject are very old, so I don't
know if Counter-Strike is still supposed to be a free mod. I know I
hit a lot of dead ends when trying to find a link to the supposed free
Counter-Strike download files. A user comment said it's just the Steam
client and not Counter-Strike.
The bottomline is: if I have to buy Counter-Strike in addition to my
purchase of the Half Life Anthology, I'd be better off returning the
Anthology unopened and trying to find a Platinum edition. If I can get
a full version of Counter-Strike for free (like Planet Half Life
said), then I'll keep the Anthology. Thanks.

If you open steam and enter your CD key for Half-life and
Half-life2 then go to 'my games' it should show you what's
available to you.
For example:
http://www.stri.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/desktop.JPG
If you double click them to install it will ask you if you
want to purchase them if you don't already have it. I think
CS should come with what you have if not it should be
relatively inexpensive.
Word of warning. Don't expect to go into a CS server and get
anything other than a good kicking. CS is even harder than
CS:Source since a lot of the really stand-out players stuck
with CS as they believe CS:Source is too great a divergance
from the original.
Good luck.

Has the original Counter Strike ever cost money if you had Half-Life?
It did start it's life as a free mod after all.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Nope, the original CS was always free for anyone with a valid HL CD Key,
the same with TFC & DoD :)

Oh and Josh, please don't cross post. We don't like it. It

Many thanks
