NickD - 26 Jul 2006 16:28 GMT ....what FPS's can you recommend? Episode 1 is on my shopping list, FEAR went down a treat, Doom3 is just too full on. Ghost Recon? Something else like that?
Cheers all Nick

I've just finished Call of Duty and its expansion pack. Enjoyed that, as I did Medal of Honour. I also liked the Cate Archer ones (the name of which escapes me right now).
I'm about to try Call of Duty 2 when I get chance to do a bit more gaming...

I'm trying to play Prey and Call of Cthulhu right now. Different types of games; the latest Tomb Raider game was fun as well as Stubbs the Zombie. Or you can just go nuts, sign your life away and start playing Oblivion.

I'm working my way through 'Prey's demo at the moment too. Not overly impressed thus far, but it's early days I guess.

I've read a couple of reviews of Call of Cthulhu. Sounds daaaaaaaark. But that whole series of books was pretty frickin disturbing... Had forgotten about Stubbs.
What's NOLF?

Good fun, doesn't take itself at all seriously - for example, one level in NOLF2 is an on-rails chase, wherein you are pursuing a French mime assassin on a tricycle being driven by a Scotsman. There's also a reasonable amount of stealth in it, which allows you eavesdrop on coversations between bad guys. These conversations have little to do with the plot, but are frequently very amusing (e.g. discussions on the best sort of fake lava to install in your Evil Villain Secret Headquarters).

Is that because you are troubled by the moral corruption of your Republic commanders and now realise that in following orders you were an unwitting tool of the evil Empire, or is it because the film was shite? :)
I tried the Star Wars: Republic Commando demo and was somewhat disappointed, to be honest. The squad management angle was over-simplified, with fixed choices in any situation that did not permit free-form tactical decisions to be made. If squad management was the aspect that appealed to you, then may I recommend you have a look at Brothers in Arms, Hidden & Dangerous 2 or SWAT 4; all games where squad management is a major component. They handle it in very different ways, but all more interestingly than in SW:RC, IMO. I like squad games :)

They aren't a happy go lucky group of fun-loving commandos, they're agents of the coming empire. I don't really care for squad type games and I like Republic Commando for not making me have to try too hard. The game was short and fun and I liked the style of the game, it actually looked a little different, as if there was a unique creative vision behind it.

Randy - 26 Jul 2006 21:31 GMT >> ....what FPS's can you recommend? > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > -- > user00 I second the motion on Far Cry. Fantastic game. Fun weapons. You WILL die quite often. It forces you to develop a lot of different tactics to make it through the tough spots. Your first impression of some battles is that they're impossible. Keep trying (don't cheat) and you'll surprise yourself. Very satisfying. Play it on Normal the first time through.
BD - 27 Jul 2006 22:53 GMT > Very satisfying. Play it on Normal the first time through. I went through Far Cry for about the fifth time recently, and decided to bump up the difficulty.
I'll try to say this without spoiling anything, but the Caldera was a KILLER until I figured out the 'trick'. Which basically came down to making sure you selected two particular weapons from the nearby storeroom before finally going outside.
My current problem is the big hallway right before you go to meet Krieger. The one with the square pillars... looks roughly 'Matrix-bank-ish'. Nasty Nasty Nasty,
I dunno _how_ I'm supposed to deal with this on Hard difficulty. My kingdom for Bullet-Time. ;)

BD - 27 Jul 2006 23:28 GMT > That sounds like the part I spent a long time ducking behind a console... Mmmm. Don't think so. No consoles here, just a hallway with pillars along either side, some hologram projections about halfway along and your goal is to get to the other end - after which, I think, is the Kreiger encounter.
Some b@$t@rd with a rocket launcher always nails me. ;)
Shawk - 27 Jul 2006 23:56 GMT >> That sounds like the part I spent a long time ducking behind a console... > [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Some b@$t@rd with a rocket launcher always nails me. ;) ... I hate it when I don't recognise something. I see me playing through this in the near future otherwise it'll drive me daft wondering about it. Sorry can't help.
BD - 28 Jul 2006 00:08 GMT > Sorry can't help. No worries... I'll either give up, or just replay it at Normal difficulty next time. ;)

The plantation in FC is not really natural layed out If you have been living in a larger city with abandoned areas you'd "appreciate" the effort Valve has done with HL2

After reaching Black Mesa in HL2 I started wondering if Valve knows how to design any landscapes other than rock cliffs and urban rubble. The game has a few good points (e.g. I thought the Hwy 17 bridge was well done, and the gravity gun was a blast) but in general it's unimaginative compared to FC. That's true of both NPCs and landscapes IMO.
Earlier someone mentioned No One Lives Forever, which has one of the best diversity of environments I've seen in a PC game.

The game engine has limitations or maybe Valve is not in for the Jungle? Compare FC with eg BF vietnam, Vietcong or COD ...
The landscape in FC is nice and beautifull but that is also the problem
:) You have plants not suited for the spot where they are located in the game

It did give me some very strange dreams though (skin eating monkeys and the like). Was considering loading it up and playing it for a third time.

Paul Catley - 26 Jul 2006 20:07 GMT > ....what FPS's can you recommend? Episode 1 is on my shopping list, > FEAR went down a treat, Doom3 is just too full on. Ghost Recon? > Something else like that? Not really a fan of FPSs these days, so there isn't much I can comment on, but I do love SWAT 4. The gameplay is unambitious in its scope: you do much the same thing in every mission, there are no scripted sequences or big set pieces, and while the AI is unpredictable, it offers few surprises. Yet the game is always tense and enjoyable and every mission is very replayable (which is just as well, since many of them are so damn hard, and if you fail, you must start again). The system of issuing tactical orders for your 5-man team is clever and streamlined, the unpredictable positioning and behaviour of the AI means entering every room is nerve-wracking, and the fiendish map design means you rarely have enough men to cover every approach. I loved SWAT 3, and I love this even more :) Success in a mission, when it eventually comes, is very satisfying. I've tried Ghost Recon and R6/Rogue Spear, but IMO the SWAT games are tops for tactical shootery :) (I tend to let my team do most of the shooting, but you can lead from the front if you like)
Somebody mentioned Oblivion. Great game, but I should point out that it isn't really an FPS; it's an RPG disguised as an FPS :)
I also claim to like Brothers in Arms, Hidden & Dangerous 2, and Thief: Deadly Shadows, but to be honest I haven't played them in ages. I suppose they are a bit old these days. None of the games I've mentioned could be considered traditional FPS games
