A friend of mine is going to build a gaming machine (low cost
as possible) for his kid. He plays on my server a lot so he asked
me about the Athlon 64 3300+ it's a 2.4GHz/ 256KB Cache
He can get it pretty cheap, and a motherboard to run it ....Is
this a decent proc for gaming? Obviously he'll need to be
very interested in the video card....and memory....but is
it a decent gaming proc?
Thanks for any help,
z

I'd say that's fine for gaming - if he's on a budget, then its best to
skimp on the CPU a little if it means buying a better graphics card :)
.. Also I would settle for no less than 1GB RAM, and prefer PCI-E over
AGP cards.. (since he's building a new system, there's no point going
for deprecated tech :) ) He may want to keep that in mind too when
working out the cost.

I'd only add that since Conroe started coming out AMD have slashed
prices of their processors. Has he priced the CPU recently? 3800 are
going for prices that are very tempting now ..of course that means the
3300 is even cheaper I guess... :)

I don't recall a 3300 in the Athlon 64 series. Is it a 754 socket
processor? If it's 2.4 ghz then it should be fine for gaming, although the
cache seems on the low side.
I would go with a 939 socket CPU rather than a 754 socket. I think the
2.4 ghz speed is as high as the 754 socket chips go. A 2.4 ghz CPU in the
939 series would be the 3800, an it can be had for around $120.00. The 939
will give you a much longer CPU upgrade path and with the right motherboard,
allow you to go into the duel core processors as well. As was already
mentioned, with Intel's new series about to arrive and AMD switching to the
AMD 2 CPUs, the 939 socket series will be falling in price rapidly. I am
waiting patiently for the FX 60 to drop below $500.00 :-). I know your
friend is trying to keep the cost low, but better not to build a dead end
if you can afford not to.
