Steam update - in this case I'm not sure it's a good thing.  I didn't
have any real issues with this part of the game - it was hard and it was
challenging but that's what I want.  Folks that don't want that can play
on 'easy' can't they?  Should the game be dumbed down for all?  (If
that's what they're doing of course - sounds like it but I haven't tried
it out yet)

Half-Life 2: Episode One Update Released
July 7, 2006, 1:00 pm · Jason Ruymen
Updates to Half-Life 2: Episode One have been released. The updates will
be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. Based on
the statistics gathered from people playing through Episode One, we're
making a small balance change to the elevator battle before you head
back up to City 17. The specific changes are as follows:

Half-Life 2: Episode One

    * Added some more health for players to pick up
    * Added more cinderblocks and barrels for physics ammunition
    * Added some extra shotgun shells at start of the fight
    * Slightly reduced the number of zombies attacking the player

Maan, I've been in Ubuntu for the last few weeks/month, but that fight
was the best fight I've ever had in HL2, or any other game for that
matter. I played it through 3 times just for that stage. It kept me
strategizing for days on how to do it better. I sure hope there's more
of the same in Episode 2.

I don't agree with these changes.  That fight was hella enjoyable.  I
was sort of breezing through everything before that, only died once or
twice from mistepping off a ledge into a canyon below, and then, BOOM,
that fight hit me, and I died two times trying to beat it.  That fight
scared the sh.t out of me.  It wasn't just a combination of the
darkness and the creepy enemies attacking me, but also how tough it
was, with the sheer numbers and the lack of ammunition.  I was sweating
by the time that elevator door closed because I had just barely
survived and I was down to a few rounds left in my pistol.

Sometimes difficulty just gets you more immersed in a game.  If
something is easy you don't really feel invested very much and you
breeze through, making sloppy mistakes because you can get away with
sloppy mistakes.  But that elevator fight was intensely immersive and
hard to the point of forcing you to give it your all.  It wasn't
frustrating though; you could definitely see how to beat it, you just
wanted to strive to be better to survive the insanity.

That single fight stood out the most for me out of anything in the
game.  It's kind of a shame that now I won't even have the option of
playing it as it used to be, as I bought the game online and now it's
impossible to download the old version.  Gahhhr.  It won't be the same.

That sounds exactly how I feel about it (though to be fair) I haven't
yet had chance to fire it up, stick it on 'difficult' and test to see if
it's still the adrenaline pumper I liked so much)
