Hey all

Has anybody else had problems trying to actually purchase EP1 through
Steam and the cards being declined?

Tried initially on debit card (the same one I used to Purchase HL2
through steam with no problems) with the result saying card declined.
Checked through the steampowered help files and all I could find was the
possibility that it is how I am typing my address as it has to be
exactly the same as the card issuer has it recorded.  Have since tried
two other credit cards and copied the address exactly as they have it on
statements all with the same result.

And yes there is money in the accounts!

I've e-mailed support as they're online help suggested but have not
heard anything back.

Cheers

I haven't had the problem but a friend has.  IIRC it wasn't that he wasn't
typing it exactly right but that he was typing characters that Steam/bank
doesn't like.  Look at that again - are you using a character you shouldn't?

Look at the large red box on:

Obviously that will wrap...

Yeah I read through that before.  I haven't got any special characters
but there is a name before the number of my place which I thought might
be throwing it, but i've tried everyway I can think.  Don't want to try
too many times as it threw up a warning that the issuer could possibly
freeze the card if Steam has three declines in a row with the same card.

Annoying because I purchased HL2 with one of the cards with no problems
when it first came out.

Thanks for the help.  I'll see what support says if they ever get back
but it looks like I may have to purchase the old fashioned way from now
on and have steam as an update delivery source only.

No, I didn't have any problem spending my plastic in Steam :o\   I used my
cc, entered my name etc. exactly as on the cc.  No problem.  Steam activated
my Episode 1 and decrypted everything in less than 10 minutes.   I wonder if
it helps that my newly used cc info and old User info is the same name etc.
Steam has on record from my registering all my Valve stuff over a year
ago???   Could there be any difference in that information of yours?

Nice to post something positive after the problems.  I received a reply
from Valve support today quoting the following information:

"Hello,
There is a configuration issue in our system which is affecting
purchases on your account
- I must manually approve purchases on your account until our technical
administrators have the
opportunity to reconfigure the settings.
I have unlocked your account for your next purchase."

Just tried with the same card as before and all has gone swimmingly.

Looks like their verification system is a bit too OTT in matching up the
correct data and they've had to temporarily roll back the security
checks a little.  Further research online from others experiencing this
seems to indicate this is a temporary fix and if I want to purchase
something again before their technical admin fix it i'll have to go
through the process of contacting them again for manual unlocking.

I did contact the credit card people as well who said there has been no
action on my account and nothing declined so it look's like it's a
problem with valves own system before it get's that far.

Thanks again for the advice.

You're welcome.  Glad you got the purchase through!   I just got through
with a) finishing Episode I and b) playing HL2DM online for about 4 hours.
Enjoy Episode I Clippy.  I liked it, even with the abrupt ending :)
