Steam Hardware Compatibility?

I bought HL2 soon after it came out and played it through to the end
(offline mode) then put it in the closet. Recently, I was in a
nostalgic mood and reinstalled it. Steam runs fine, but I can't get the
game(s) to start - when I select one from the menu nothing happens.
Since the only change I have made to my system in the meantime is an
upgrade to a larger LCD monitor, I assume the problem is related to
updates to Steam.  Does anyone know of a steam hardware compatibility
(or incompatibility) list?  Is this a likely sign that I won't be able
to play new HL games when they come out?

Have you given it time to update fully?

Are you still trying to play it in offline mode, I don't think Steam
lets you do that forever.  After a while you have to log in and update
the software.

That's what I meant - when I installed it this time, it automatically
did the update (yes, I waited for it to finish) and the game wouldn't
start.  Through Steam, I also downloaded Counterstrike and some of the
other Valve titles related to HL, but I couldn't get those to run
either.

I uninstalled the whole thing and tried reinstalling HL2 from scratch
without the update, but there didn't seem to be any way to bypass the
update.  Also, there didn't seem to be any way to start an offline
game.

I'm not really concerned about HL2 as much as I am about future
releases.

I would expect the monitor to be the least likely cause of a
problem. Are you sure you haven't installed/updated any other
software on your machine between installations at all?
McTrack - 22 May 2006 20:22 GMT
Of course I've installed other software in between installations.
Particularly, I have installed all of the Windows Updates and SP2. I've
also installed a couple versions of MS Visual Studio (uninstalled the
free one after I decided I didn't care for it).

A kind soul informed me that he had the same problem and a fresh from
scratch Windows install fixed it for him.

I expected Steam updates to keep pace with Windows updates - perhaps I
was expecting too much.  :)

I've decided I can live without Steam apps...
