I plan to get a new computer in a couple of months. I bought Half Life
2 via Steam. How do I install HL2 on my new computer?

There is a couple of methods to accomplish your quest :)

1) Install the steam client,  login and let steam download the lot over
night
2) Copy all files from the install directory and reconnect to steam
3) Use steam backup/restore

I'd recommend ad 1 if you have broadband and a good steady cocnnection
No hazzle and no to less interaction needed :)

Well basically, I just did that.   AND went from 32 bit mode to 64 bit mode
HL2 in the process.

Got LAN?  Good.   Hook the rigs up, drag/copy the entire Steam folder on the
old hd to the hd on the new machine.  On the new machine, find in the
%installpath%\Steam\   folder the 'clientregistry.blob' file and move it
someplace else that's safe.   Run the Steam client from its new location,
log in (you'll have to as all the info was in that .blob file and it's gotta
be re-written with info pointing to the new location of all the Steam
stuff), let it do it's brief update thing, and watch as your "MyGames"
screen comes up complete.

My Steam folders total 18.4 GB, so I really didn't want to wait all night
for it to re-install everything.   This worked.   I didn't lose a thing this
way.

McG.
