Hi there,

I finally got an ADSL connection, speed 25Mbps/1Mbps (I was on a dial
up before). I attempted to set up a deathmatch server clicking on the
"server" button the HL2 graphical user interace. I found out myself
alone in the chosen map (I presume the server was set up), however when
I renewed the list of available servers to play HL2DM, I could not find
_my_ server. Besides, when setting the server, I was not prompted to
set up the name for the server. I wish I could give it some 'cool'
name. Thanks.

thats because you used "create server" in the hl2:DM menu? that only creates
a server for you to practice maps before playing online really. you need to
install the source dedicated server to run your own server thro steam,
although running a server thro the gui is not the best way. best way is to
use the standalone dedicated server method.

and many of the posters to this newsgroup are very helpful with servers, i
was grateful of their help setting mine up! :-)

it can take a little while to figure it all out but its worth it, especially
if you have an upload like yours!

Thanks. OK, so I have done as you recommended to me. I installed a
server into the directory which I designated, and I got an executable
file of the same name as the directory's name. I tried to run that file
(both from Windows and rom command line prompt), but nothing happened.
Now what ?

So, can anyone advise me how to go from installing the server ? How to
run it ?

To those concerned about the speed of my connection -- it is in reality
7Mbps/1Mbps only.

Did you follow the tutorial on the phenyls House link which Son of LaL
provided?   did you run the HLDS update tool?

Incidentally, the 7Mbps downstream on your connection is irrelevent -
the most important part of the server is its upstream capability.  1Mbps
should allow you to host for about 8 people.  (the rule of thumb for
Source is 128Kbps per player)

Going to steal from Peter[AGHL] now......:-)
He wrote....

Don't use the gui use commandline parameters when starting hlds

Edit the following files
autoexec.cfg
server.cfg
(located in hl2dm\cfg)

mapcycle.txt
motd.txt
(located in hl2dm)

Start the game like this
srcds.exe -console -game hl2mp -maxplayers 12 -exec autoexec.cfg -autoupdate

Create a hl2dm.cmd (or hl2dm.bat) with the above content
Start the server by opening hl2dm.cmd

Please let us know if you need help with the config files
Some explanation goes here
