OK, I'm near the end of highway 17. I do the thing on the extended
bridge, pull the plug, shoot the gunship etc. Now I can't get back. For
a point of reference, how do I get back from where I pulled the plug??

Go back the way you came and fetch your car! :)

(You are not near the end)

It's been a point of amusement to me that you can't get on top of the bridge
and just walk back to your car.   Nope, you gotta do the monkey thing and
get back to the door below the bridge at the other end of it where you began
this little trek.   I found the whole bridge thing amusing on a couple of
levels :)   Come to think of it, I never did try to really get on top of it
after I pulled the plug on the forcefield.   Either way, you do have to go
back, get the car, then continue HWY17 :)

Thanks for the replies. The problem is I can't figure out the way I
came in. I walk back and forth, up and down  and just can't figure how
to leave the area under the bridge to get back to my car. I need help!!

Where are you?  After getting back across the bridge, through the door and
onto the cliff path I did have to look twice for a way to get off that path
but you just keep going and it takes you back up to the top (after a little
shooting of course).

I did the shooting before I went to bridge
It scared the hell out of me as I went through a hole in the floor - LOL

Did that the second time round - hadn't meant to drop through and knew what
to expect.... I think the expression 'Oooh sh.t!' went through my mind....

Far be it for me to put my 2pm in but if it were me - and it's obviously
not :) - then I'd say f**k it and do the level from the beginning.

Half-life2 isn't really especially big so I'd take the chance to replay
what areas you can/need to. It's fair to say the canals are one of the
best bits.

Cheers.

Where again are you right now, and where did you leave the car?   If you're
still at the brick windowed part where you pulled the plug, then you have to
go back down the stairs, thru the door into the storage room with the chain
link fencing and iron all around, jump down, exit that floors door.  The way
back across under the bridge should be obvious by this point.

Not to denigrate your problem, but I've just tried it, and it's hard to see how
you could get stuck.  Where exactly is the point at which you can't get any
further?  What can you see?  I'm assuming you are under the bridge and have
crossed to somewhere near the original bank.  If you are still where you pulled
the plug, McGrandpa's directions will get you back under the bridge.

"denigrate"?  I wonder what word I actually meant.  Let's try "trivialise"
instead.

I got through. Me and my sense of direction. I kept on going the wrong
way under the bridge. I kept on going back to the wrong building.
Because it had a stairwell, I kept on trying to get out and of course
couldn't find the exit.

Thanks for your help. Perhaps, I'm just a little retarded! I'm on to
the antlions.
