Hi all!

All of the family are safe back at home. The destruction was massive and
there wasn't a utility pole between our house and *anywhere* but out
house was fine. The water didn't make it this far and no trees went
through the roof.
We still don't have phone, but I got electrickery and now I gots me some
big fat *cable*!
:-)
It took a Cat 5 whirlygirl to drag me kicking and screaming into the
21st (20th?) century.

I went to NOLA for the first time day before yesterday. It was
unbelievable depressing and eery in the residential areas- mile after
mile of empty houses, abandoned cars and no people. Canal Street was
practically deserted. The French Quarter had exactly the same mix of
local color and drunken tourists/relief workers but there were only
maybe 10% of the people that there used to be.

Neil, it would make you sick to see it, shoog.

Hey Thad, its great to see you back!  I'm glad to hear that everyone's
OK!   Saw the whole thing all over our news channels for several weeks,
the damage looked catastrophic.   I hope someday you and the rest of
N.O. manage to find some way back into 'normality' :)

Thanks for the good wishes, but it ain't gonna happen.

I have a lot of friends on the Mississippi coast (where Katrina actually
hit) who lost everything, but they're rebuilding like crazy over there.

Oh man, that's a relief. Like Jack I've tried contacting you on about 4
different email addresses, and we were starting to get worried. What's
the job situation like now? Not many new mortgages going to be granted,

Well, when I had my little midlife crisis/ nervous breakdown early 2004
I left the mortgage biz. I started a building service contracting
business and it's doing OK.

Cheers, McG. I thought it was an absolute bargain, so
I sniped it and won it in the dying seconds.
It sounds great, crisp and clear. No tinniness which I
had with my previous one. That's gone to my 12 year
old now. The action is a *little* high for me but I'll get that sorted
next week. Spent about 4 hours on it today;)

Did you know that any musician true to his roots is playing the bass (4
string only)?

I have seen guitar players try to simulate bass riffs by using some 5 finger
picking style
But to no avail

Playing bass, chords and melody only gives an average in performance
Specializing in only one task makes perfection :)

In order to document this I give you one very famous Dane

Hehe, what rubbish. Although I *do* play bass in a
band now, mine doesn't have a mere 4 strings... It's a
5 string Peavey Millennium BXP:)

So take that and stuff it up your 4 strings, Peter.

An interesting tuning is to have a full step down (from E) having the fifth
string as a high string
D.G.C.F.Bb (IIRC)

For the 4string bass you sometimes dropped E to D having D.A.D.G

In Germany "H" equals "B#"

> In Germany "H" equals "B#"

Actually it goes like this

standard nomenclature
A   Bb  B   C

German nomenclature
A   B   H   C

This has lead to some very strange and odd musical translation errors  ;-)

Imagine one specific note shifted a halfnote?
Ouch

If in luck it's from major to minor :)

I can't read/write a lick of music, but I do understand it :)    One
instrument doth not a band make.   No matter how fantastic the player of
that instrument is.  However, one playing a piece written for multiple
instruments is thereby intepreting and rendering their intepretation through
one instrument.   That doesn't have to be 'bad', but it will be only one
instrument.  For effect, I will embellish with bars from other instruments
where I feel it's appropriate to bring across the whole melody.   I'm not
looking to achieve the feel of the complete piece and be all voices, but am
looking to create the most pleasing song with whatever effect I can on one
instrument.  When playing by myself, that is :)  When playing with others,
I'll often take rythm.   I'm not good enough for lead :)
