Re-installed my computer a couple of week ago.

Re-installed games. Just had time to install HL2 before I went to bed,
left it updating overnight, ready to play off and online. lovely.

A couple of nights installed Battlefield 2, went to play it online and
remembered that it was released bugged to f.ck and would not connect
online.

Fine, I'll just install the 1.2 patch I have, spent 20 minutes hunting
out the patch then I go to play it. *still* can't connect, check
online and I find out there is a new patch, a bollock breaking 175
meg!  I start downloading and leave it since even with 1 meg broadband
you are still talking close to an hour to download (assuming you can
get a download at full speed.)

I don't end up playing it since I go on to play HL2 because I can
actually play that now without waiting.

I go back to BF2 tonight and guess what?

I start BF2 because I fancy a quick online match......

I start it up and guess what? A new patch!

and guess how big this new "patch" is?

*287 MEG*.

No that isn't a typo, a "patch" that is *two hundred and eighty seven
megabytes* in size and mandatory if you want to play online.

The thing I love about HL 2 and Steam is that when I first installed
Half Life 2 when it was first released until my reinstallation I never
had to search out for patches and because I come in, switch on the
computer go off and do whatever I have to do before settling down to
play a game I never even noticed the patches being downloaded, hell I
didn't even have to have the DVD to reinstall or play it!

I remember being similarly frustrated the day that HL 1.0.0.9 was
released.  the first version of HL to be released with TFC, and I spent
several hours watching around 80MB trickle down my 56k modem.

Whats the difference between downloading BF2's patch overnight and
downloading HL2's patch overnight?

With BF2 you have to find a download not hidden behind some "premium pay me
some money server"
When finally have found a suitable download most likely it's incompatible
with your download manager
And most likely the download is invalid or crashes during the night
When you finally have downloaded a patch which is valid most likely you have
to uninstall BF2 and reinstall as you have had the demo installed and some
registry settings is invalid
And after you have patched the game you go out and buy BF2:SF and you have
to add the same patch again!

Thats the difference!
Time elapsed for patching BF2 was just about the same it took me to install
HL2 from the DVD and unlock it - and this was during the HL2 release date!

Thanks to Google I managed to fix the many problems without going totally
bananas

I think his point is that since Steam, all valve's patches have been
tiny updates, released often.  before Steam, a new patch would be a
major chaotic event for the HL community which only happened a couple of
times a year, disrupting online play for days while everyone catches up
with the mammoth download.

because 3 times I've gone to play BF2 but had to update it with ever
more stupidly big "patch" files. There is also the factor of
automation, click one button and leave it and its all done, no having
to hunt down the patch etc.

I don't get it - how is that a Steam issue? They just deliver the content -
it's the game developers that determine what the content should be. Or am I
missing something?

Collins?
