Play without internet access?

Hi,

I downloaded Half-Life 2 demo and find it very good but I was wondering
whether I could play the full game without an Internet connection. It would
be pretty annoying if I can't play on a standalone PC.

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

To play the full game you need an Internet connection, to validate the game and
unlock the content.  A broadband connection is preferable, as it will take a
*very* long time to do this on dial-up.

After that, you can choose to play offline if you wish, though the procedure for
doing so is a little clunky (easy, but clunky).  You must have an Internet
connection for the validation though.

You can play it in offline mode after it's validated.  But don't be fooled.
You need to have Steam connected online to use the offline mode for the
first time and every other time after you connected online to Steam.

It shouldn't be called "Steam."  A better name would be "A Tree Branch
Shoved Up Your a.s."

You may have different packaging to us here in the UK. Paul and I got
the dvd version, where the internet requirement is listed under 'other'
in 3-point type at the bottom of the back of the case.

For the first game ever (in my experience) that absolutely required an
internet connection (ie not just for online gaming), I think it was
disingenuous at best to imply that they'd adequately warned everyone.

Shoulda been a bigger sticker on the front.  First game of it's kind - would
have been fairer to those that impulse buy, have it bought by grannie etc
etc...

To the OP it works fine off-line once it had been verified and updated.

'S'ok Neil, I kind of went fishing for a response from CF :)

So do I, but we've had the same debate before.

I notice that the recent GOTY edition has a much clearer and more prominent
warning.

I think it's a disgrace. I downloaded Half-life2 of the net and I
couldn't see the sticker anywhere!

Just to correct a couple of things. It is in no way 'clunky' to play off
line and it is perfectly possible to play off-line *forever* iof you so
wish; providing you don't want any update to the game :-)

Not for me.

Occasionally, I get a "Cannot continue in offline mode" error. All the games
are showing 100% updated. No idea what's causing it.

At this very moment, I can start CS:S in offline mode and play against bots,
but Blue Shift gives the error.

The steam icon in the system tray has a little red bar to indicate it's
offline. The actual sequence of events is:

{Double click game}

[Half Life: Blue Shift - Steam]
Preparing to launch Half Life: Blue Shift

[Steam - Error]
This operation cannot be completed while Steam is in offline mode
{OK}

By "clunky", I merely meant that the option is not well set up.  To play
offline, you have to attempt to start Steam, which then looks for an online
connection, and only offers you a "Start in offline mode" button if it doesn't
find one.  I didn't mean to imply the option doesn't work properly, just that it
treats playing offline as if it is some kind of error.  I only said a *little*
clunky :)
