No chance playing HL2 with this graphics card?

I think the answer is "NO", but I'm asking anyway...

I have a PC with integrated video card, that gets ~1500 3DMark2001
marks.  That is approx 25% of what a GeForce4 MX440 DDR gets.

Many posts say an MX440 will allow play, but won't look very good, as
all the fancy features must be turned off.

What sort of playing experience could I expect?
(Before I download the demo and see.)

Thanks,
Mark

PS: Rest of system: Pentium 4 2GHz, 400MHz FSB, 256MB

What GPU style/type?

It's an Intel Extreme Graphics
http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/eg1/

It's DirectX 9.0 compatible (hardware), but does not support pixel
shaders.

I have a 4x AGP 2.0 slot (Low Profile) but only a 175W PSU and I
suspect it's a custom size and shape (Compaq Evo D510 Short Form
Factor).

Compaq had an MX440 part that fitted, so if I could find a Low
Profile MX440 that would work.

What GPU/card would use as much power as an MX440, but give greater
performance, while fitting into an AGP 2.0 Low Profile slot?

Thanks,
Mark

I am running HL2 on my laptop which indeed has the onboard Intel EG thing
Other specs i 2.0 Pentium M and 1 Gb mem

Looks like sh.t compared to a decent gaming rig, but it is playable

I believe there is some low profile fx5200 or Radeon 9250 cards
available.Try a google or froogle search.Look for a card with128mb
128-bit memory interface and no DVI.You might have to order the low
profile backplate seperately.Another 512 memory would really help
also.That board takes standard 184-pin PC2100 ddr sdram non-ecc
unbuffered.-Vic

Would one of those work with only a 175W PSU?
(It's very hard to find power requirements for GPUs online!)

Yes, I was thinking of doing that.

Thanks!

Without knowing exactly what the onboard chipset you have there is,
there's no sure way of telling.  the Source engine needs (as a minimum
requirement) a card which supports DirectX7 - if your chipset doesn't
support that, then the answer is a definite 'No'.

if it does support that, then you should get it to run, albeit at
minimum detail + low framerates.

It will run, or rather, it will trudge along at the pace of an parapalegic
sloth.

If you enjoy slideshows, buy it.  If not, but a cheap 9800 to get some
enjoyment out of it, and probably some more ram (at least 512mb is needed
these days, ifyou have RDRAM, I feel sorry for you :) .)

Probably even worse :-)

With an integrated video card the chances of haveíng an AGP slot is rather
slim
Getting a PCI probably won't give the OP any real benefit

You can choose between a ATI 9250 or an FX 5200

On a sidenote: You can also get Matrox Millenium (or Parhelia) or NVidia
Quadro4

Ah!

nVidea Quadro4 200NVS was another Compaq part (and so presumably
works within 175W).

I (half-heartedly) tried googling to see how a Quadro4 performed
compared to an MX420 (typo - I said MX440 previously), but wasn't
able to find out how a Quadro4 compared to an MX420...

Thanks,
Mark

You ever get the feeling that sometimes the march of progress rewards
people seemingly at random?  If, for example, you bet on the RDRAM
horse ... well then you bet wrong.  Similarly for investing in Intel
vs. AMD in the 80's; even though they are doing comparable business now
your investment in Intel would've made you millions and you'd have lost
everything put into AMD.

My brother had one of those, but it ran away.
