Just a quick question - how much space does everyone's Steam folder take
up on their HD?  mine takes up a whopping 9GB .. which is a bit annoying
since the partition on which it is installed is only 10GB (I assumed a
couple of years ago when I installed it that 10GB would be ample..
whoops) :-/  lack of space on that partition appears to be causing me
some weird errors in Steam too..  damn.

How are you checking it?  In Windows Explorer I'm right-clicking on Valve in
Program Files and looking at the file properties...

Well I was checking the size of the F:\Program Files\Steam folder .. if
I highlight all .GCF files it comes to around 6.4GB.  my steam username
folder comes to around 2GB.  AFAIK, none of the games actually need any
of the content in the username folder.

Harumpfh!  I put the thing in C:\Games\Steam and everything goes under that.

Geeze, wonder why mine is 11.3 GB (12,186,543,782 bytes)??? Maybe it's
the dedicated server....

14GB. 9.75FB of gcfs. So I'm assuming the rest is saved games
from all the single player antics.

relaxed 80Gb)

my F: drive is FAT32.  I don't think using NTFS makes much difference
does it? (Except for zero'ing off unused sectors)

That's probably it, you have more 3rd party maps.   I have over 300 HL2DM
maps and still end up dl'ing more every time i get on a server!

cripes! 300 maps!  I think most of my custom maps are actually in
HL1/CS/etc.. I built up quite a collection over the years..  my HL2DM &
CSS folders are relatively small :)

Additional questions from the noob.  What's the server IP to find the server
in 'Servers/favourites' in Steam or how do I otherwise find the Rats Cat
House?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks Lief, that is probably the single most useful post in here since
Striders 'Alternative uses for socks'.  Worked great.  Server now in
favourites and briefly tested (was that Mr Firewater I fragged)?  Sorry I
left - have some work to finish (scintillating stuff on lifting operations
and lifting equipment regulations).

Next question - is there a map pack?  Takes around 2 minutes to download
each one during the game and by the time I've done that, joined a game, had
a look around to get some bearings, been killed a dozen times the maps
changing again and I'm downloading again.

Yeah, that was me and I did spend the majority of my brief foray flat on my

I did just presume my Steam user name would have carried across but
apparently not.  I'll ensure it's there next time so you know who your damn

I'm guessing gametiger (the site in Lief's post) could still find it if your
IP changes and I go all short-sighted again?
Cannon Fodder - 30 Sep 2005 01:45 GMT
Use the Steam "Servers", set your filter to Half-Life and it will
show... Click on server name and it will alphabetize... Pretty
simple... :)

Just realized why the server bogs down after 8 people join... I'm
using a Hub instead of a router or switch... Ordered a router/switch
from Directron and will pick it up tomorrow... Have 3 'puters
connected to my DSL and a hub splits the signal three equal ways and
not by demand... Dumb old fart...

Maybe not, I think Steam has some issues right now, looking at the forums
and judging by how few servers seem to be up, and the fact my game will
freeze and crash to desktop after a few minutes.  This has only happened
since the latest update though.

Ditto - I could probably remove all the old HL1 stuff since I never
actually play those on steam, I keep my HL1110 folder for that :)

You could well be right :-)  I haven't played any games since the latest
patch/update.  - the more worrying thing was that Steam outright refused
to start earlier

Although I re-ran the installation .exe and cleared out a bunch of stuff
on the drive to free up a couple hundred MB - at least Steam starts, I
daren't install DOD:S just in case it is a problem with HD space)

I've had some of the old stuttering issues since the latest patch but no
CTD's.  HDR seems to be enabled 'full' in advanced video options.  I've
turned it to 'off' and I'll try it again later - maybe try that?  Valve need
to fix their latest patch soonest.

If you have an ATI card I've also had some issues with the ATI 5.8 and 5.9's
(lock ups on various games).  Gone back to Omega 5.6's for now.  No probs
since.

Some of my probs may be to do with new PC parts, remnants of old drivers
etc.  I'm thinking of wiping the drive and having a fresh re-install soon.

Yes, also noticed some stuttering with the latest drivers. HDR is also
enabled in video propoerties. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.
Question. Is any part of HL2 HDR enabled or are we getting ready for
Lost Coast?

AFAIK the only HDR is in the forthcoming Lost Coast.

As to the stuttering there is another update today - hopefully this will
help...

From Steam News...

A small update has just been released which will correct a Source engine
DirectX configuration problem. The DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime from
Microsoft is required. When launching a Source engine game on Steam, users
who don't have this latest version of DirectX will be directed to this page

ah well, I guess 9GB isn't too bad afterall - looking at the contents of
my Steam folder more closely I was able to eliminate a fair few fairly
useless bits'n'pieces, my Steam folder is now down to 8.3GB - I'll just
have to play around with my partitioning next time I do a reformat (one
is long overdue, I've not done a proper reinstall of W2k for over 2 years).

Use Partiton Magic to shuffle partition sizes around. I use it all the time.
You can move the Steam folder around if you delete the .blob file
afterwards.

I see no reason why someone should suffer under the 10Gb limit for anything.
My friend, the money hunger upgrade whore, installed his 3rd HDD giving
him a storage capacity slightly over .5 Terabytes, as he's taken
measuring it. :-\

I have 4 - 3 internal and an external.

120, 160 and 120.  My external is 250gb.

Mostly down to games, porn and a load of US TV shows that I've
downloaded and am waiting to watch.

heh, i've always meant to grab a proper copy of PM.  I've a really,

HL2 savegames can take up a lot of space, how many have you got?
Ben Cottrell - 28 Sep 2005 23:36 GMT

Not too many (maybe a dozen) - my main problem appeared to be old
HL1-related content, which I temporarily moved to another drive until I
can bother to rearrange my HD and give the Steam folder a new, bigger,
home.  I've got a good 300MB free after installing DOD:S, which should
keep me ticking for now :)

I got 9.99 Gb in my Steam folder. That is including the backups of the
old CS and TFC for about 620Mb.
Games installed are:
HL2
CS:S
DOD:S
HL2:DM
CS
DOD
HL:Blue Shift
HL2:CTF
FireArms (for HL1)
