Well, it appears that you have to buy the HL2 Gold or Silver editions
through Steam in order to have AND play DoD: Source.  I used my HL1 original
CD key and my HL2 Collectors Edition key with Steam.  I pre-loaded
DoD:Source and so now it is in the "Just Released" part of the games list
with only Purchase and Update News available in my Options for that game.
It is NOT unlocked as Valve said it would be a year ago, nor can I purchase
it thru Steam.

I'm fairly sure there is a law somewhere that covers issues like this.
Valve wrote the game, Valve controls the game, Valve is responsible to all
buyers of the game.

Not Vivendi.

I'm real sorry Valve didn't get much money from my purchase of the HL2
Collectors Edition.  Valve is the one that stated that's the same as buying
the Gold Edition through Steam.

I want my DoD: Source game unlocked now, Valve.

For a reg at a.g.h-l I can't seriously believe you didn't realise that
none of the initial retail versions of HL2 included DoD:S. It was
clearly stated this was the case from the very beginning. That is the
reason why I, and many other DoD fans bought Silver through Steam.

DoD: S SHOULD be available for purchase through Steam at a cost of $20
US to any users who do not already own a licence (Silver/Gold).

Just out of curiousity, how much were/are the silver and gold packages?

Remember prices are $US.

Yeah, I found last night after posting;   THAT purchase option IS available
to me :o\    Not like I really want to PLAY DoD any version, I just think it
should be available to CE buyers the same as Gold ed buyers.

Why can't you purchase it through Steam?  You said the option is there.

Glad you are safe, BTW :)

Thanks, yep, everyone made it thru this one.  Happily it wasn't near as
severe as it started out looking to be.

I found last night that the option to buy DoD:Source IS available to me.  I
don't really like DoD, but just think that it SHOULD be free to CE buyers
just like Gold buyers.

Yeah, I agree - although I paid for DoD:S last night anyway... hmm. Did Valve
really say it would be free to CE owners?

No, my mis-remembering (old codger, remember?).   Valve never said we/I
would get DoD:Source.   I just thought they would.  They gave us DoD, not
the source version.   DoD just isn't my cuppa.  Neither was RTCW or any
squad based action.   That is a Valve entry into a realm I'm not interested
in, and I'm sure there will be more to come.  Some I will like and some I
won't.  I was simply miffed that it was not instantly available to us CE
buyers.  But if you buy the Gold or even lowly Silver thru Steam you get it
free.
This showcases a bit of a mess created by the Valve (Steam) vs Vivendi
(retail hardcopy) dispute and settlement.   Valve is (to ME) discretely
thumbing their bird of paradise to all of us who did NOT purchase direct
from them through Steam.   I bet they resent having to support any copies of
the game from which Vivendi made the profit.  Thing is, it IS Valves game,
there WERE two discrete chanels from which to purchase, and that's not the
consumers fault and should not be a problem to the consumer.  But I do
resent being treated like the 'redheaded freckled stepkid'.
Well, that's it then.  I'll just get it off my hd.

This is precisely the case:  Valve quite knowingly is pissing on retail
CE buyers.  All they had to do is offer a $10 discount for CE owners and I'd
have bought it.  As it is, instead of $10 of essentially pure profit, they
will get nothing from me.  In addition it has soured me to future Valve
products.

Dropping all the sarcasm;   no matter how they or anyone paint it up, at the
end of the paragraph, they've still simply acted out with a little normal
human sliminess.   Great business practice with the public.   They've shown
me they're just as f.cked up as Ubisoft or Vivendi.   It's the human thing.
I can deal with that.
