Ok, bit of an exaggeration, and no, ive never fired a gun in my life.

I haven't played a game yet that sufficiently models rifle recoil.
When you fire a rifle, the recoil is in the opposite direction that the
shot is fired ... namely, right into your shoulder. Depending on how
well you're holding the rifle (and what type of rifle it is) it may
wander a little bit but it's certainly not going to suddenly point at
the sky. The main effect of rifle recoil in real life is that ... the
next shot is just harder to aim. You have to regain your sight
picture, which takes time, and depending on the force of the recoil
your shoulder muscles are a bit fatigued and it's harder to force them
to line up the next shot correctly. None of this is very amenable to
simulating in a videogame, mind you, so they choose to "simulate" it by
simply having your weapon jump up and you have to scroll the mouse down
to find the original aimpoint.
Rifle recoil is a bit worse when your weapon isn't shouldered, but I
wouldn't know first-hand ... the rifle ranges I've been to don't even
let you do such a stupid thing as just firing a rifle when you're just
holding it in your hands. You can't get good accuracy that way anyway.
Handguns are a bit different. They do tend to jump up when fired,
especially the larger calibers. But what would happen then is that the
handgun would aim higher up in your field of view - your whole field of
view wouldn't change (as it does in games) as that implies that the
force of the handgun somehow knocks your head into aiming up at the
sky, which is absurd!
By the way, for someone who (presumably) fires lots of firearms in
games, you might want to get some experience with it in real life too.
I did play first person shooters before I ever shot a firearm in real
life (Wolfenstein 3D at the age of seven scared the crap out of me),
but once I got my own rifle and went to the range I gained a much
larger appreciation of what these games are trying to emulate.

The closest i've had to firing a gun is paintballing, which btw is
really good fun.
Are there any shooting ranges in the UK?
