Problem with very last bit of the game

I've played all the way through, and am at the end of the final sequence.
After trying a number of times to finish it, and getting the message about
"failing time-critical sequence", I finally went and looked at a
walkthrough.
Walkthrough says I'm in the right place, and doing the right thing -
sucking spheres out of the columns and firing them at the bit where
what's-his-face is getting ready to escape. However, my spheres don't seem
to do any damage to the panels around him, and every time eventually Alyx
says oh no, he's getting away, and the "failed" message comes up.
 What am I missing??

I'm shooting at those, AFAIK - the panels that are sort of within the
core, above the bubble that he's in, right? The ones that you have to sort
of shoot through the gaps to hit?
The problem is that even on the "easy" level, I get off only a few shots
and then I'm out of time.

Yes shoot spheres into middle of core...you need find good spot shoot thru
the some gap of rail fence to damaged the core with circle metal things...
hard to explain hehe LOL

Actually, I'm pretty sure I understand what you mean about needing to
shoot through the gap. The problem is that I can only get off a few shots,
and then my time's up.

I think that liitle bit too late try again from start, you have got to be
quick i think...

Yep it is time dependant so you need to get to the top of the
level as quickly as possible, as he's moving up the level at
the same time you are. The quicker you get there the more
time you have to shoot them.

Sigh. I was afraid of that; I had trouble figuring out the correct
jump-to-moving platform sequence, and he must have gotten too far ahead of
me.
Guess I'll either have to see if I've got a quick save far enough back,
or do a new game from the beginning of the level. (At least it doesn't
matter WRT having enough weapons. <G>)

Thanks again for the replies; I did find a save game far enough back, and
have now been able to get to the end scene.

No surprise that it's another ambiguous one... <G>
