If this is a real editorial, someone needs to employ a new sub-editor,
as the one they've got displays near Guardian-esque incompetence.  The
closest thing we have to a "National Motto" is surely the royal motto,
which is "Dieu et Mon Droit" ("God and my Right").

Taken as a whole, it looks like a clumsily adapted version of a chain
email with (presumably, given the references) American origins.  If
people are going to forward it, as suggested, a little correction might
be a good idea before hitting send.

Only time I've seen 'In God we Trust' written as a motto of any kind is on

It is OUR motto, actually.   Was surprised (and pleased) to see it was
the British motto too.  but now find it isn't?

                   "The Buffalo Theory"

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest
buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest
and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This
natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because
the general speed and health of the whole group keeps
improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as
fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of
alcohol, as we know, kill brain cells. But naturally,
it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.
In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the
weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more
efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter
   after a few beers.

Literally "One from Many", I think.

It's the motto on the seal of the United States, about which there's
much interesting info here (symbolism of the devices on the seal etc)

There is a lot of symbolism involved in all of the nations and states
seals, and that on currency.  Most Americans never bother to read about
any of it.  Thanks for the link, took me back to American History days
in high school :)

British as a whole dont have one unless you want to count the motto of the
British monarchy ('Dieu et mon droit' - or 'God and my (birth) right') which
has been around since Henry V (1400's).  There is however one attached to
every coat of arms and each regiment etc in the forces has their own.  A
selection below for you....

I like the Thames Valley Police one - 'Let there be Peace in the Thames
Valley'.  Perhaps that should be updated to 'Let there be Peace, speed traps
and a 40% rise in hate crimes since the London bombings in the Thames
Valley'

If people are going to forward it, perhaps they'd like to think a little
more about what it actually says.   It reads to me as a poorly thought
out xenophobic rant from someone who buys their political views from the
"Sun Says" column.

in either case, posts like that are really not appropriate for aghl.
whether it was the OP's intention or not, it comes across far more as
troll bait than anything else.

>Taken as a whole, it looks like a clumsily adapted version of a chain

You are correct. Unfortunately many Americans fail to see the
hypocracy in this pile of crap. I am an American, always have been,
veteran of 2 armed conflicts, and still I think this is little more
than smoothly-worder Ku Klux Klan drivel.

"Immagrants must adapt"? Like EVERYONE WHO IS NOT AN AMERICAN INDIAN?
We've forgotten who was here first obviously.

"dilute our sovereignty and our national identity"?:  In other words,
everyone must be exactly alike? Can you say WW2 era Germany?

"This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles,
trials  and victories by millions of men and women who have  sought
freedom." Yep, this verifies your suspicion, For those too stupid to
understand what I mean, England is MUCH older that "Two Centuries"

"We  speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese,
Russian, or any other language.  Therefore, if you wish to become
part  of  our  society,  Learn the language!": Spoken by people too
stupid to learn a 2nd language. The fact is the EVERYONE in this
country has the RIGHT, to speak whatever language they wish.

" If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another  part of the
world as your new home,  Because God is part of  our culture.": Yeah,
don't let that first ammendment get in the way of your cause
though....

Here's the facts: I am an American that is beginning to realize why so
many countries hate us. I Love this country more than life itself, but
if I hear one more person verbally tear the constitutional rights of
other citizens out of their hands in the name of "patriotism", based
on where a person USED to live, I think I'm gonna puke....

Sorry for the rant.........

There are other ways to put to words what one *feels* than what we've
seen here.  You're right that this country was invaded, settled and the
indigenous populace fairly butchered to make room for others from
everywhere else.  So, what do WE do about that NOW?
Immigrants are required to speak, read and write (some) English.  There
is no requirement for them to 'give up' their native or any other
language.  Immigrants do not have to "adapt", they do have to accept
that others are likely to be different from them, culturally.  I'm
native, and I know I have to accept others as well.  If my belief in God
offends you or anyone else, sorry about that.  Ignore it and go on,
we're Americans.
Spanish speakers in my area have been trying for years to have Spanish
made the first language in this state in the schools and public places.
All I can do is raise an eyebrow and vote against the proprosal, if it
ever gets to the polls.  I don't think it will though, as something
about English as the language of the land in some official writings has
been brought up by judges weighing the matter.
Simple truth is, this nation is, today, populated primarily by emigrants
and their immediate descendants.  My maternal great grandfather had a
lot of trouble speaking English, but that didn't hinder his CHOICE to do
so.  Any one of his kids or grandkids that spoke Gaelic around him got a
little lecture :)
One thing could have made a difference in this topic, from me also.
"Where are our manners?"  because I think that we really do know
better...

Interesting, although perhaps not that useful. While Scotish Gaeilc is
as good as dead, its really just a dialect of Gaeilge, (the Irish
language) which is still very much alive. But everyone who can speak it
can also speak English, except maybe on a few remote islands...

You might hear it in music and spoken in movies, but nobody around here
speaks any Gaelic at all.  By the time I got to school at age 6, I

That wasn't a rant, but a well stated position on an issue.

You touched on something that's always bothered me.   The indigenous
populace.  Here.   Our forefathers by far outdid Hitler with the

Well, I did, actually.  I'm not apologist at all.  Ah, right, well
see.... none of us were around for all that massacreing.  OR slaving.  I
was around early enough to see a lot of stuff around me, but nothing at
all with massacres or slavement.  Ok, it happened, it's carved in stone,
it's history.  I don't know anyone that was a slave nor do I know anyone

It don't take so long to add up what the estimated population was of
indigenous peoples here at one point in time (like 200 years ago) and
then look at what it is today.
So, ok the comparison to Hitler and Japan through WWII was off base.  It

I don't think I could find that post again if I tried tbh.  The only

But if you do go for a monitor from a place which does this service then
*ALWAYS* make sure you use it, else you can be sure that you'll get one

Quick way is to have a pure black screen....with it on of course.  This
shows if any are stuck ON (light shines thru, colors too).  Next, look it
over with a pure white screen.  The first three LCD monitors I bought are
all perfect pixels.  How lucky can ya get?  So, I learn about the bad pixel
thing and carefully look it over in the store.  It's Circuit City, I pay for
it, then up at their counter hook it up and play with it a while, looked
fine there.  Two days later, I note a tiny tiny dark dot in the upper left.
It didn't wipe off.  Some times it comes on, sometimes not.  It's ONE pixel
(or sub-pixel), it's dark, it's out of the way, it works sometimes.  I
didn't take it back.  I have to go looking for it actually.   Dust motes are
about the size of one of these pixels :)  So, this is the one my luck ran
out on.  Only, it isn't so bad at all.
The SyncMaster 930B is good.  You can't vary the height but it tilt n
swivels fine.  Has dual inputs, built in PS, some good software for color
matching.  It's a brilliant picture.  And it's response time is fast!

Circuit City scams! - 23 Aug 2005 04:43 GMT
I'd be careful if you bought it from Circuit City.   With or Without
those expensive extra warranties.   If you have a dead pixel you may
want to try to get out of the sale buy returning it promptly.  They
have a certain amount of dead pixel that are allowable before they will
accept the return.   If you return it tell them it's some other reason
and not dead pixels.  I'd never buy anything from CC.  Here is why.

I too have had a bad experience with Circuit City.  I have been making
posts in a HDTV massage board so I could get help with my Sony KP53HS10
repair.  The first tech CC sent out was horrible.  He ended up doing
more damage to my set than the original failure which was a D-board.
CC still has not fully fixed my set.  They never proformed  their
duties under the Extended Service Agreement I paid $399.99 for.   If
you ever do buy a product from CC, please do not buy the Extended
Service Agreement.  CC will not live up to their promises (contractual
obligations)!  I wish I was warmed before I made my purchase.  I am now
out $3,000 ($2599.99 + $399.99)!!!
http://hdtv.forsandiego.com/messages/460/3228.html?1123320124

I've learned my lesson the hard way!  We, who have been wronged by
Circuit City, must get the truth out!!!

Circuit City scams! - 25 Aug 2005 02:14 GMT
I starte with the message board afte they screwedup the picture.   I
need some one to ID the virticl line problem.  The tech said the TV was
fine but it turned out to be a bad flyback transfermer.   So CC sent a
bad tech out and in doing so he messed up the Flyback trans and then
did something to my settings.  It's still covered by the extended
waranty because thye extended it by 3 months for the time wasted by the
first tech.  But now they just ignore me.  All I get are vague letters
from the legal department.   So based on their lack of effort and
hearing from their legal department I thoughtI'd flood the internet
with my horror story.  If they want to sue me that is great!  Then they
have to deal with the TV they damaged!!!  I'm sure they want me to fade
away like most people do but I will  piss and moan, kick and scream
until these little F*ckrs fix my set of go out of business.   I'm not
the only one they have done this to.   I can imagine how po'd you'd be
if the same happened to you or a family member.   :-)
.
So if you go and spend $5 or $5,000 at CC after reading my post, you
are a bigger fool than me!  You have been warned!  Have a great day!!!

They're no different than Conns or Frys or CompUSA.   They all do this the
same way.  The entire market is 'Buyer Beware'.   I've likely spent some
$10,000 in ONE Circuit City store, over the years since they opened it.
I've returned bad video cards, cameras and other odds n ends with no problem
at all.  I've never bought their extended warranties.  And while that seems
to bother their sales people pitching that 'product', it's never bothered me
to say "no, I don't want that at all".
The most sophisticated item I've ever bought there is a laptop computer.  To
be honest, I won't spend as much money as your TV cost on ANY item unless
it's got a great manufacturers warranty.  If it's $1000 or more and the
warranty less than three years, then I don't buy it.   The better their
warranty the better they think of their own products reliability.
I feel yer pain, but I don't agree with your judgement call on purchasing
stuff from Circuit City.

I have a 15" samsung tft
http://computing.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/ps_1290522/114401.html with a response
time of 25ms. Now i don't get any sort of ghosting with any games inc HL2,
and i must have got lucky with no dead pixels. Only gripe is the resolution,
but can't complain.

You can set it to quite a few resolutions, up to the max of 1280x1024.  60
to 75 hz refresh.   Image is crisp, clear, sharp and saturated.   It works
well with the games too.  Here, have a look:

3DMark05 - 4812 3DMarks  which is bad as the P4 3.0E gets right at 5000.
All these are posted and published at the ORB, look for McG.

If you have something that's coded for 64 bit, it screams.  If 32 bits, it
screams with some things and with some it just looks like a stock clocked
FX53, which isn't a bad thing, just not as fast as one might think?
I haven't run any benches with Far Cry or Doom3, but Far Cry 64 bit is mind
blowing.  Doom3 has no optimizations I know of for 64 bit, but with Ultra
quality mode selected, 4X aa and 1024x768 it is very fast, smooth and
stunning visually.  In 1280x1024 it chugs...but image quality is amazing.
Now, I have to migrate my Steam/HL2 stuff from the old rig to this one.  10
megabits minimum on my LAN, so how would I do this?  Just drag the
C:\games\Steam folder to this machine and then what?  :)

Is this worth the bucks?  Well, I don't know how a single core A64 behaves.
So I can't compare it to anything but the P4's I' ve been running.   I won't
pay much attention to what I saw in 3DMark05, because its CPU bench seems to
be seeing an Athlon XP 2400+.  Perhaps if I could run two 3DMark05's side by
side I could just add the scores together :)

You might be interested in a thread in c.s.i.p.g.a called 'Is Windows X64
destined to become the new Windows ME' (or words to that effect).  OP was
Magnalus.  It's not a long thread and not every post was informative but
some are.

LOl, sorry.  Steamdickhead crossposts it through here so thought you might
have heard of it.  No probs, it's...

comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action

I re-read the thread and it's not overly useful but the OP, Magnalus is
using Win X64 so you might be able to have yourselves a conversation and
swap notes, tweaks etc?

Ok - is it too late to just mention that I'm in two minds about Steam
as a content delivery system? I'm sure there are arguments on both
sides, but what I'd really, really like is to see them laid out clearly
in Klingon (which is a real language!).

That's not asking too much, is it?

You mean .. qatlh tlhIngan Hol Dajatlhbe'?

...or 'why not say it in Klingon?'

I think it's a good point but take it further. Developers should cater
better for this 'real' language.  After all in Oregon a mental health
hospital advertised 'Position available: Interpreter, must be fluent in
Klingon'.   Jerry Jelusich, a procurement specialist for the county
department of Human Services was quoted as saying "We have to provide
information for all languages our clients speak"   If a hospital is going to
cater for Klingon then surely Valve should?

Just to save a little bit of the debate that normally follows, some of it
has already been done here...

Neil, perhaps Steamkiller could take up your quest?...

You're both clearly delusional.
Klingon is *not* a real language and never will be.

What I would really like to know is can anyone recommend a good UPS or
surge protector? I can't find any really in-depth information on their
effectiveness.
Don't answer in Klingon, please.

Reverse trolling, shoog... it's not big, and it's not clever.

Oh, wait a minute, yes it is!

Reminds me what else we're missing in here lately - any contributions
from our retarded sister newsgroup aghltfc... is it still going? They
were pretty stupid, weren't they?

Speaking of Klingons, the wonderful Boing Boing directed me to this
list of Klingon fairy tales.. quite brilliant:
http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/lists/22MikeRichardson-Bryan.html

Particularly

"Snow White and the Six Dwarves She Killed With Her Bare Hands and the
Seventh Dwarf She Let Get Away as a Warning to Others"

and the sublime

"The Hare Foolishly Lowers His Guard and Is Devastated by the Tortoise,
Whose Prowess in Battle Attracts Many Desirable Mates"

Almost as stupid as the clerk at CIRCUIT CITY who waited on me the other
day. I was in CIRCUIT CITY trying to find someone who had in-depth
knowledge of UPS and SURGE PROTECTOR specs and maybe even some general
house wiring knowledge. I really needed some SURGE PROTECTOR information.
The clerk tried to sell me the most expensive items they had, but would
only speak in KLINGON. I asked to speak to the manager of CIRCUIT CITY
to complain and I told him, "KLINGON IS NOT A REAL LANGUAGE" but he
would not kill the clerk or even have him whipped.
I left CIRCUIT CITY in a huff and wonder if anyone else is as unhappy
with them as I am.

Know what you mean... Went in mine the other day and the whole staff
was speaking French and eating smelly cheese.... As I neared them they
all jumped up and ran away screaming "RETRAITE, RETRAITE"......

Circuit City scams! - 25 Aug 2005 02:04 GMT
Circuit Ciry Sucks!

Hi All!

I have had a major bad experience with Circuit City.  I have been
making posts in a HDTV massage board so I could get help with my Sony
KP53HS10 repair.  The first tech CC sent out was horrible.  He ended up
doing more damage to my set than the original failure which was a
D-board.   CC still has not fully fixed my set.  They never preformed
their duties under the Extended Service Agreement I paid $399.99 for.
If you ever do buy a product from CC, please do not buy the Extended
Service Agreement.  CC will not live up to their promises (contractual
obligations)!  I wish I was warmed before I made my purchase.  I am now
out $3,000 ($2599.99 + $399.99)!!!

I've learned my lesson the hard way!  We, who have been wronged by
Circuit City, must get the truth out!!!
