McGrandpa - 17 Mar 2005 22:29 GMT Well. I am blown slap away. Maybe my ISP's news server has dropped the ball. Dunno. I know this is the first time in five years I've looked in here and there are NO new posts, from anyone. Spooky. McG.

Spooky. >McG. > > This newsgroup has gone mad, now shifting into catatonia. There are some newsgroups I frequent that have been continuously assaulted by various loonies, cranks and kooks for years and are still capable of remaining vibrant in discussion. I'm surprised that the level of vitriol seen hear was maintained for as long as it was. Even the nuttiest fruitcake would have a hard time keeping up a crusade against a content delivery and distribution system, but enough annoyance has gone by the boards that the life has been sucked out of this place.

I enjoyed it - played it through twice and still dip in and play occasional levels now. I like finding new ways of achieving the objective (and I love the freedom to do that).
Didn't mind the Trigens too much - OK I didn't enjoy their leaps of amazing distances at you and I *really* didn't enjoy that they could kill you with one swipe even if they are out of arms reach but they were a challenge, one that could be solved with a little stealth and taking them out before they knew you were there. Those that did spot you were best dealt with by back-pedalling and the shottie.
The stealth part was good. I could sneak up on/past the opposition (mercs or trigens). With the other jungle-based game I'm playing through at the moment (MOHPA) the foliage only hides the enemy from me - they appear to be able to see me as clear as daylight!! Very poor.
Biggest issue in Far Cry for me though was the ending - big build up to what I thought was going to be a mother of all end-of-level boss shootouts and ..... nowt, nada, no big shoot-out. Sat there a little incredulous as the titles came up. Hope they fix that in the next one.... and yes, I'll be buying the next one.

Could have done with some more variety though i.e. something more than just outdoor jungle and indoor labs/caves.

Very poor. I'm still playing it for the first time. I like it. Yes, sometimes it's bloody hard and the Trigens mean you have to make use of the X-ray specs and binoculars, but that appeals to me. I enjoyed Deus Ex and IGI for the same reason - you can scout out the landscape and plan your route first. Even then, there'll be surprises en route and you may have to change your plans. That you can change plans, retreat and try a different approach is a good feature to me.
Although the way I play it, if I come across a firefight between soldiers and Trigens, I tend to find a quiet corner and let them slug it out, then I go in and mop up the survivors. Minimal risk to me, but I do miss the excitement of actually being in the midst of it all. Especially as nine times out of ten there's a mounted machine gun somewhere which you can use to hold your position relatively safely. When I replay I'll try to head in to those sitautions differently.
Another feature I like is the way the soldiers use the boats and jeeps to get around, but if you pick them off carefully, you can hijack their vehicles.

I just didn't like the story, having the dude turn on you at the end was pointless. I didn't really care about the danger presented by the mutatagen, it didn't involve me like say stopping Breen or holding back Hell did. I can't look back to any part of the game that I thought was especially memorable, the main thing I remember is thinking, ooh don't the shadows look cool across my weapon and arm.

I enjoyed Far Cry ok until I got right past that forklift. After that it seemed to be just an arcade shooter. A really pretty looking one, but just an arcade shooter. The way it started off it looked like it was going to be great. I really enjoyed it the most from the very start thru the carrier. And, that's all considered 'training' ;) The TriGens could have been a lot of fun. There were just way too many to be sensible though. McG.

Hi McG, I see about 25 posts dated today, I'm a bit behind as I spent yesterday reformating and reinstalling XP, my install was about 18 months old and was getting flakey so decided to do a fresh start. BTW I finished Substance a couple days ago, As you know it is the same as HL2 but with more enemies and a few twists here and there. I enjoyed it anyway.
Regards, Rene Lamontagne
Jack Harney - 18 Mar 2005 00:14 GMT Gee, ya must be a tough old dude Rene... I've only gotten to "Nova Prospekt" (or whatever it's called...) and that was at the cost of 10,000 deaths...

Jack Harney - 18 Mar 2005 03:42 GMT Yeah, Substance is a trip... Kinda like HL2 & SS combined... Insane action... Just checked the frequency of posts today and I see several every hour on the hour.... When I got home at 5pm there were 51 new ones from when I left at 8:30am....

In a 1 day period since I had last looked, the ng came up empty. Perhaps it was the news server that had some maintenance being done, who knows. James Whyley - 29 Mar 2005 22:34 GMT I've been to Canada though never to a place with Beaver in it's name. Never got round to attending the bashes as I was, well, rubbish and often found myself out of the country when they were going on. I don't even have half-life installed anymore. I'm waiting patiently for the new and fancy team fortress before I install it again.

Civilian_Target - 30 Mar 2005 08:52 GMT Not bashes, gatherings.
Gathering[n] - An annual or bi-annual occurance where select members of the alt.games.half-life news group meet in a pub in central England to consume fermented vegetable drinks (sometimes served by wenches), dance with ladies and talk a big pile of shite.
You should come to the next one - the only downside is the hangover.
