Hello all,

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I "think" I heard someone say that there was
another patch (newer than 1.1.1.0) released. Is it true, and if so where can
it be found as I've searched (FilePlanet and Google) and couldn't find it?

TIA

Not unless you are using Steam.
And Steam will provide you with any *new* patches, which is really the whole
point.
You should'nt need to Google any longer.

Thx for the reply Lefty, I'll keep using Google until they (Valve) sort out
Steam as I've read a few threads that people are having problems with Steam.

Right, but you understand your game *should* continue to work OK without the
new patch.
My understanding is that there will be no more patches released for HL or
multiplayer MODS, and once WON stops working and Steam is the authentication
server, then Half-Life multiplayer will *only* exist through Steam players
and their servers, and all patching will be done that way, and only that
way.

Can anyone else confirm or deny?

With the exception of CS 1.6 which strangely isn't a forced upgrade. Is it a
steam thing?

I've located the HL 1.1.1.0 patch several places.  I'd already dl'd it
(it's 84 megs on the hd) but was wondering if Valve/Sierra was pulling
it or tightening up the reigns with Steam on the scene now.  So far it's
independantly downloadable still.

It's one of the lesser known Goldberg Varitions.

If you don't mind, I'll steal yours from now on, by the way.

There's a 1.1.2.0 patch, but it's only available through Steam, and
it's not clear what it does, but it hardly seems worthwhile, as Steam
is still in Alpha phase...

Still in Alpha - as it is not finished yet

"Alpha" does not have any relationship to whether a project is
"unfinished" or not .. alpha is the testing stage at which the
developers do not know what the outcomes of the tests will be (early
stages of development.. where the results are wildly unpredictable) ..
they're well past this stage, and know about all the outcomes & bugs.

officially, it is out of beta (The second testing stage where the
outcomes are known/predictable), and has been for a few weeks...  All
this means is that they have completed the testing phase and have
released it to the masses...  Yes.. its still got bugs.. but anything
which is ever released as a final version always comes up with new bugs
which weren't discovered in the testing.

Well, it kinda depends on how you #define alpha and beta.  IMHO, a
Beta release is "We've found all the bugs we can on our own and all
the bugs the small group of alpha testers were able to find for us,
have fixed them all and done the regression testing, and now we're
opening it up to a larger group to see if they can find anything we
missed."

Either the problems people are seeing are a result of server resource
limitations and they really had no idea how it would scale up, or they
let the masses have it before they worked out all the bugs.  You
decide, I'll consider it in Alpha till the complaints here drop to
nearly zero.

Really?  That's news to me, but I'm a green as a pine tree.

Every MOD (and other software) I've ever seen developed was released
typically to a small group in "Alpha" stages for initial testing (sometimes
not even complete, but in portions for initial responses).  After this
results in a semi-polished product, it is released within the gaming
community in "Beta" stages released for the purpose of bug finding on as
many peoples' different machines as possible.  Only work on different
computer configurations will really bring out the glitches.  Once a
sufficient number of these bugs are dealt with at the developer's
discretion, then an "official" release is sent to the masses.  This is where
we are with Steam, buggy (still) or not, IMO.

Yep, I know

Btw - do you happen to know how many years steam has been in development?
I think its about one and half year ago I got into this damn HL addiction
Even then people talked about steam in newsgroup and wondered if Valve were
moving away from the gaming business

Well, I'm not too sure just when it was initially concieved.
My main memory of it is that Counter-Strike was chugging along happily with
some really good third party anti-cheat software keeping it all in check.
All of a sudden, Valve announced that those programs would (soon) no longer
function with any Valve software and that Valve would be implementing their
own.
Steam is a big part of that software originally announced to replace third
party anti-cheat software such as Cheating Death, Paladin and others.  I do
know that Valve was publicly stating an intent to implement it's own
anti-cheat measures as early as October of 2001.

Half-Life itself and nearly every other game ever made was released before
it was 100% bug free, but that does'nt make it an "Alpha" release.
