Mike Seddon - 28 Jan 2005 00:28 GMT Gents,
I'm about to upgrade.
I'm looking at a bare bone solution (athlon 64 3000) from these guys - http://www.autdirect.co.uk/
I need to add to their spec at least a video card and a hard drive.
As an option, I could upgrade the on board sound to a sound card.
So, guys, what are you recommendations for awesome upgrades to get the best out of Halflife2 (and to be honest, will also be good for most other games...)
Cheers,

I didn't compose this but I love it!!!

") No, plenty of British jobs have gone to India as well. British company call centres must be springing up all over the place there.

") Yes you lot are really poor. That's why you complain about fuel prices while all owning 5 litre cars. (Fuel prices that are a third of the fuel price here).

Comfort, speed, performance, handling, parking....excellent. It's a Jeep, of course! :o)) McG.
Cannon Fodder - 28 Jan 2005 23:48 GMT HeHe... 5.6 liter here... I don't complain about the price of gas, I revel in it... The government charges a fair tax that maintains our highways, the refineries earn a fair profit as do the retailers... Now, why is your gas, petrol or whatever ya wanna call it so expensive???? Who is gouging you??? :)

Who is gouging you??? :) The government, we don't pay a lot for petrol, only over 400% tax approx current price:
petrol: 15p fuel duty: 55p VAT tax on the tax at 17.5%: 13p
total price: 83p per Litre (£3.13UKP - $5.91 USD per gallon)

Civilian_Target - 29 Jan 2005 22:39 GMT Heh! In Ireland, fuel duty is calculated to cover the health costs of road accidents to the government, and the cost of subsidising the public transport system.
And then Road Tax and car reg. tax covers the costs of the roads/potholes.
Of course, none of this worries me too much, I'm just annoyed at the price of bicycle components.

Iain Dingsdale - 28 Jan 2005 09:06 GMT > Gents, > [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > > Mike Ignoring the yanks winding us up about prices, there are several options depending on how much you want to spend. In terms of hard drive, a decent SATA drive is nice, a newer 16mb cache model is nicer, such as the maxtor +10 or the seagate 7200.8. Video card - it depends on the kind of detail you want. The 6600GT will play it well for about 140 quid, the 6800GT will play it with eveything turned as high as it will go and barely break a sweat - much more future proof. I wouldnt spend any less than that as its not going to last long at all. The sound isnt too much of an issue and an easy upgrade in future. The biggest performance hit to HL2 is memory, get as much as you can. 256 is a complete no no, 512 is bearable, 1gb is ideal and 2gb is nice.

I haven't got framerates to compare, but I was never aware of any slowdown.
My other bits are: AMD64 3400 Soundblaster Live! Value + 4.1 Cambridge Soundworks (about 5 years old!) 1gb RAM 40gb ATA HDD. Seagate, forget which model.
I suspect the HDD slowed loading times a bit, but I'd been forewarned that they were significant so I was expecting a pause. I actually appreciated them because it gave me a chance to stretch my knuckles and have a quick drink (from a glass on the desk, not go downstairs and make a coffee).
