OT: US PS2 games in the UK?

Does anyone know if I can buy US PS2 games and play them on a UK
console/TV? Or does it require modifications...

I've been reading about Katamari Damacy:

http://www.deadalfs.co.uk/reviews/1897/index.html

which sounds great, but is apparently not available in the UK. I'm wary
of importing it (especially since Amazon.com has just told me 'the item
can't be shipped to your selected destination').

Any PS2 importers in the group?

Cheers

I really don't get it when people do this. Since you know it's
off-topic, why not spend a second or two searching for "playstation"
in your groups list and post it there instead - thus getting far
better or more accurate answers?

Knowing Vis he's probably scoured the internet and newsgroups about this
little problem of his. What you are failing to realise is that a good lump
of the people who post in this NG even spradacly know most of of that lump.
They try to answer any Half life questions which come up, no matter how
often, with friendlyness and knowledge.

I like to imagainthat this NG is like a grouup of people who's favorite
topic is Half-Life so talk lots about it, but sometimes they would like to
ask the advice of other members who may know questions that other people
will know. Look at it like the work place, the job is half-life and during
the breaks we talk about what we've been up to.

I think my point is, don't get on upset if a newsgroup goes of topic every
now and again. It just means that people have more intrest than just the
subject matter and are trying to make friends. THere are quite a few people
in this NG who I have actually met in real life and consider them to be
friends and have shared a beer with. They know that I can't spell good and I
canget away with that. If you don't like the direction this NG takes you
sometimes then you are more than welcoe to go elsewhere. I'm pretty sure you
won't be missed.

As to Vis, lo mate, how's the family. You will need a modded PS2 to play US
games unfortunatly. It is illigal to do this iirc. If you do get your hands
ona modded PS2 why not hav a word with one or two of our american chums.
They might be more than please to end the game out to you.

Bye then,

Freek out.

Hmm.. I'm not quite sure why you've chosen to post that particular
tirade. Perhaps you have missed my point entirely - I'm not remotely
upset about it (I'm a PS2 owner myself). I just figure he'd be much
better off posting his question in the right group that's all.

No doubt Neil will do that if he doesn't get an answer here.  In the meantime,
he's just asking his mates.

Exactly. And freek answered it for me (thanks, dude).

Andy, there's *too* much information out there - I got totally swamped
trying to google any sense myself. I could go and check out the ps2
newsgroups, but then I'd have to check back regularly to see if anyone
had answered, and even then I wouldn't know whether to trust their
information.

Alternatively, I could just post an OT question in here, and know that
someone reliable would at least have an idea of where to go next. We've
done it for years, on a myriad of different subjects, and I'm
constantly surprised at the number of experts who pop up to help. I'm
sure there are many regs who now know a lot more about PC components,
for instance, and we certainly know which dark rum is the best. I won't
even go into the current recomendations for MMO games, but thanks to
other OT posts I've increased my knowledge of all these things without
having to trawl through other newsgroups (I wouldn't have even known I
*wanted* to know those things without reading them here - serendipity
at its best).

I guess my point is that for the asker it's a simple start, to the
answerer it's their chance to give something back and for the rest it's
at worst an easily ignorable distraction and at best a chance to learn
something new as well.

Thanks for the concern, anyway.

In a.g.v.sony-playstation2, asking about modding goes over about as
well as asking for a CD Key in here.  Much safer in AGHL. :-)

LOL!  I'm sure there are *LOTS* of modded PS2's around, just like souped
up XBoxes :)  If you were to want to mod the consoles, where would ya go
for serious info?  Like running them from a PC?  :)

That's why I asked my PC upgrade questions here (and got loads of help).  Sure,
there are more appropriate groups and lots of info out there, but a lot of
people here are very knowledgeable about such things, and I already know and
trust many of the people who answered.  Plus, as you say, you have to check back
on the unfamiliar newsgroup, and on OE at least, you have to download all the
damn posts before you can do anything (which takes an age on dial-up).  I don't
think newsgroups are well suited to single enquiries, they need to be lived in
:)

Unfortunatly, FreEk? is correct. The UK had a preview release of Gran
Turismo 4 that I would love to see but it won't work here in the US.
Here is a site that has all kinds of modding stuff. Don't have a clue
on how it all works though. :-)

Thanks, Erik.

Interesting site - although the thought of applying a soldering iron to
the insides of our ps2 makes me shudder! I don't suppose you know if
the slide card idea works at all?

... certainly looks a lot safer!

Slide cards are a pain in the a.s.  I know this from experience.  If you
want to go this route get new ps2 case that opens up from the top to expose
your dvd player.
