Hi there,
When playing HL2 (collector's edition), the game plays fine for 10 - 15
minutes, then hangs and quits to windows, then shows some kind of memory
related error. All my other games including Need For Speed Underground 2
play fine, with no such problems.
Specs:
Radeon 9800 Pro (Catalyst 4.11) tried 4.12 beta, no help.
Athlon XP 2600+
A7N8X-E Dlx
SB Audigy2
all drivers and bios are up to date.
The game plays smooth at highest graphic settings 2x AA, 16x AF, but then
the sound suddenly stutters and the game hangs then quits.
Any one else experiences this? Any solutions?
Thanks.

I get plenty of stutters. Usually when the game is auto-saving. But it
doesn't crash at that point. Maybe there's a way to turn off the auto-save
function and just save at a time that suits you. (When you're standing still
and there's nothing happening, as this would be less likely to cause
problems).

this may sound a bit strange but it could be a heat related problem with the
video card of processor. You could try opening the side of you case for a
better air flow.

Sorry for the date. I just realized it was set wrong.

Lol. I was just about to say, that maybe the real problem is that you are
living about 29 days in the future. I guess you are more keen on New Years
parties than the rest of us : D

You need to switch off the 'wife' option.
More than likely your wife or mother switched this on.

What sucks is I just got that same problem just a few minutes ago. That the
first time it has happened. Except I had been playing for about 1hr. I have
an nvidia 5900.
Beats the sh.t out of me why it did that.

Is your CPU being cooled properly? Are there any programs or utilites
running in the background - anti-virus checker running? MSN messenger?
AOL messenger? Gmail notifier?

When I loaded the game the resolution defaulted to 1024X768. The first time
I played the game it crashed so hard at the first loading sequence (about 10
minutes in) that my system did a spontaneous restart. I changed the
resolution to 800X600 which is what my desktop runs at anyway, and have no
further problems like that.

I finished the game, and had to suffer reloads every 20 - 30 minutes.
Sometimes it could quit in 10 minutes.
I bought the collector's edition, I hope the next HL would not be so buggy,
or I'm getting it from Wrz ;-)

M8 you are an idiot - What fool pays ?30 for a game and puts up with
restarting it every 20 minutes or so ?! You clearly have an unstable system
and need to get it sorted THEN play the game. Incidentally HL2 played
through for me without one single lock up even though it chugged and
stuttered at times.

I've had no problems running HL2 on my system. There is one known
little niggle to deal with occasionally, but we find that the offline
mode problem is being worked on by Valve. And that was the niggle :)
P4-2.66/533/512 L2, GA8-IPE1000-G, 1 gig PC3200+ @ 333 and dual channel,
PNY Ti4600 w/Nv 61.77 driver, TB Santa Cruz sound, 2 IDE 7200 rpm UDMA5
hd's, 160g and 60g, XP Pro SP2. HL2 and all other games pre-loaded,
used old HL CD Key and HL2 Collectors Edition key to 'authenticate'
everything. Worked out pretty well too.
HL2 runs fine, 1024x768, everything on and high, no VSync, 4X AA and
8tap Aniso. I do get a brief stutter when loading a main section. But
that's after some 20 sec of the LOADING message and the game starts
moving again. That's a non-issue I think. If I get killed and the
level reloads, that takes just 3 or 4 secs and no stuttering.
Honestly, I'm having a ball with this game. Even the replay just caught
me up and here I went again, now I'm at endgame again and looking at
another replay :) Hm, so what happened to my taking my time and just
exploring every little thing this time? Ha!

Stop telling bullshit to ppl... You know actually nothing. My CPU, RAM,
MotherBoard, SB Audigy2 ZS are 100% prime95 stable but Half-Life 2 isn't as
stable as I want it to play. I have sound stuttering in the whole parts of
the game, I'm experiencing random game 'quits' to desktorp with an error:
Memory cannot be 'read'... Bla Bla Bla. Half-Life 2 is bugged... Everyone
knows about that.
