Half Life 2 crashes:

1) repeatedly at startup, before the main menu appears,

2) when loading a saved game.

3) when loading the next area in the game

My system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU

1.0 GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE video card

SoundMAX integrated digital audio

Windows XP Pro, SP2, with all current windows updates installed

What I have done so far:

Shut down all non-essential processes and programs

Defragged the hard drive

Video drivers are the most current; I have validated the Half-Life 2 Steam
cache files.

Deleted, then re-downloaded local game content.

Note:

After I validated the HL2 cache files, it worked fine and I played the game
for awhile until I got to the trainyard and went down the steps.  It started
to load the next part of the level and crashed, and I have not played since.
The game now crashes repeatedly at startup.

I have the same problem.
I ve been playing HL2 wthout any problem, until the forced download of the
latest stuttering patch. now it crashes every 10 minutes of playing.
I have tried to put a autoexec.cfg with these two lines textureintohardware
something as instructed on the net but no avail.
I have given up playing HL2 and Counter srike source. It does not start either
carshed instantly while loading a map.
I wonder if HL2 crashes if it runs without that memory-leaking-Steam in the
background?
But the fact is no way we can run HL2 without Steam.
