The only time I can see hands is when wielding a weapon. Is his normal in
this game. Is here a way to show hands on the steering wheel or when lifting
a crate for example?

No there isnt a way and there hasnt been a need for one. Works all well
without showing his hands for everything.

You got a fixation or something?

Except that it looks silly.

When you're driving, you should keep your eyes on the road, not
checking out your nails and stuff.

It would be cool if you could pick your nose in the game.
Then look at your 'gold' and fling it at those sand ant things.

Then why do we have to see the weapon model and the hands holding it while only a
crosshair is enough to target? If you think displaying hands isn't necessary while driving
then what's the point in seeing the vehicle itself? Hands make the game look more
realistic IMO.

Please be careful, you just gave me a Trespasser flashback.

My guess is that to show hands picking up any of the variety of objects in the game would have meant
a great deal more programming - each object having different dimensions, weight, handles (or no
handles) etc. Know what I mean?

(take aim, FIRE!)

Yep. They could probably have kept half a dozen people real busy for another
coupla years, just creating hand and arm art/animation/programming for inter-
action with all of the 4,738,520 different objects in the game. And not just
'holding' graphics, but picking up, turning, twisting, lifting, dropping, throwing,
tossing, driving, etc.- and making it all look good and believable and not stupid
and distracting. I can clearly see why they skipped all of that hassle, to get the
game out during this decade.

(send SOA for the joke for that punchline.)

Yeah, I agree and I already posted about this a while ago.  Having the hands
would have helped me to control the damn things.

No one's saying it doesn't work, just that you apparently need hands
to fire a gun, but not to drive a vehicle or pick up a crate.

I think the answer is two reasons: 1) tradition - most FPS games have
hands on itmes like guns that you carry in your inventory (eg. guns)
but not on world objects; and 2) programming - it takes a lot of
programming to have hands that interact with world objects, especially
when players will not really appreciate the difference (see point 1).

Deus Ex got around the hands-on-crates thing by simply placing the
crate so close to the player (when you pick up a crate) that your
hands would be out of shot anyway.

I'm not a fan of driving games, but do you get so see hands there?
Mind you, the whole vehicle becomes a HUD, so maybe it's easier to
implement hands when they don't interact with the outside world.

However, I do think having real hands would be a nice touch. So we
could press buttons and levers in the world. Maybe it's something
we'll see in the next batch of games now that graphics cards are more
powerful?

I have real hands and would never go back to the old plasticine ones I used
to have. And yes, they work with buttons and levers too!
