The only thing the patch did is this:

mat_forcetextureintohardware "1"

Just change it back to "0" in your autoexec.cfg if you want to go back to
the way it was...

My apologies.  It's:

mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 1

Still stutters both ways for me.. In some cases worse.

So some cases being one of two options...

A)  mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 1

B) mat_forcemanagedtextureintohardware 0

If it stutters normally both ways, AND stutters worse in some cases (1 or 0)
... Then...

Isn't it fair to say that your Half Life 2 just stutters badly or terribly
what ever you do to it?

I think what he means is: either way it stutters worse than before.  Same here.
Is that really all they altered?  Was the variable included before?

I think the variable (and the bit of code attached to it) is new..   the
variable is there presumably for people who dont like the patch and want
to play it as it was before :-)   (A good idea since the option not to
install the patch doesnt exist..)

Yes, it does. You can always turn the automatic installation of updates
off in the Steam properties page of every installed game/mod/whatever.

However, if Steam knows there is an update available, it won't permit
you to play the game without installing the update.   this is done
deliberately because Steam is supposed to ensure that everyone always
plays with the latest version

Is that true of HL2, or just CS:S?

If the former, it renders the option completely pointless.

I think it's true for all Steam games (HL2 included).   But of course,
steam will only know theres' an update available if you actually allow
it to login online.  If you only ever run it offline, then it will never
know.

I patched and I notice no difference whatsoever.  I feel fortunate that I'm
not one of the ones whose framerate got screwed.  Honestly, its really not
possible that Valve could have missed this bug.  This is one of the worst
examples of shoddy game production I've ever seen.

Guys, read this HL2 Tweak Guide 2nd article down.  It's like 10 pages,
but a good read and he does talk about the stuttering problems and some
things HE knows can help it.  Can't hurt, right?

If HL2 was updated DID nothing for me stutter wise still crap, what
did steam do with 5 years of programming this game ?

Not really. It doesn't stutter at all on my computer.

I have only a very brief stutter occasionally when it loads in a new
area.  It's gone in about a full second.  I've tried a couple of the
simple tweaks listed in the article here http://www.tweakguides.com/ and
haven't had time to play it to see if there was any change.  I heard
turkey calling!  ;)
