Is it really worth downloading from Steam or waiting for it to be released
from the shops?

Okay if the steam release is a week or so earlier then yer, go for it, but
if they are released the same date/time or very near then I would prefer to
get if from the shop.

Now the other matter is that steam may cut out on all the media costs - does
steam cost less?

A good question to which nobody as yet really has an answer.

Half-life2 will be released on the 16th barring major disasters like
flood, hurricane, Gabe running out of donughts.

The real question is, will it be despatched early from the online
distributors like it apparently was with other games.

Actually, I think it works out more expensive.

It depends what you want.  If you like multiplayer you can play CS:Source
now.  But if you're only interested in HL2 then buying from a shop makes
more sense. (You get to play it at the same time as Steam purchasers do and
you have a nice set of CDs or DVD in Europe.)

Again, if you're only interested in HL2 this is true, especially if your
country has a high VAT rate (which is added to the Steam price
automatically)

If/when downloading from Steam you can use this content even if you buy a
DVD from a shop

Get it from a shop and just use the golden key
It's just a matter of typing in the key from the box and the game is
activated
Very straightforward

I believe you can only get HL1 Source through Steam. So if you want that,
you might be best to buy it through Steam. Otherwise if all you want is
single player HL2, go for store bought. I took the new and dangerous route
and downloaded via steam. Hope it doesn't bite me in the a.s down the road.

The collectors boxed edition also includes Counterstrike Source and HL1
Source, See EBgames site.
