According to Chuck Osborn at PC Gamer, there's not going to be any
multiplayer in HL2 except CS:Source.

I think he's worded that badly. He says there will be no multiplayer in
Half-life2 except CS:S however the silver and gold releases across steam
also included Half-life:Source which may well include Deathmatch.

Even if it doesn't how long do you think it will before someone uses the
source engine to create a mod of it. Not long I'd wager.

HL 2 multiplayer will be one of the first mods made I imagine.
