I purchased about a month ago a Compaq Presario laptop (of course having HL
installed on it as well :) ) and it's working great.. However, even
though in the actual specs of the unit says 256 MB RAM on the box and sheet,
I checked out of curiousity just last night in Control Panel > System >
General tab and for some reason it says 192 MB ?! What gives here, have I
been shorted for real?! So, I first contacted Compaq by e-mail-- of course
it'll be quite a while until I get a friggin' response despite the
"auto-confirm". Then I called their supposed "24/7" Compaq tech support
line and they're closed on the weekends! I have no choice but to try and
get a hold of them because the store where I purchased this can't do
anything about it as this unit has the typical one-year warranty and the
store covers the 2-year extended plan.
So, in the meantime until who-knows-when, TUESDAY maybe (as July 1st over
here is Canada Day on Monday) while I friggin' wait unti then, does anyone
have any idea ? For starters, could it be : a) the OS can't properly
display the ACTUAL RAM on-board, b) Compaq actually stiffed me of the
specified RAM, c) the unit does contain the full 256 MB RAM as specified,
BUT maybe not FULLY functioning (ie. some defective chip out of the batch in
the slots?), or d) The missing difference of the RAM (64 MB) is probably by
chance allocated to other system resources. Again, I am aware this ain't
tech support, but there are a fair bit of you out there that seem to
demonstrate quite a bit of knowledge on hardware/software and what not.
Plus, just to see if anyone simply has a clue on this, or has been through
this similiar scenario.
All the same, I'll have to wait through this long weekend and see when I
contact Compaq..
Thanks in advance.

Two possibilities jump out;
1) Windows takes up a lot of RAM; at the best of times, my 512mb machine has
only 400mb-ish to spare.
2) You have an on-board shared graphics card that uses the main RAM as
opposed to it's own seperate.
Given that it's a Compaq laptop, i'd guess the latter. Alas, there is no way
AFAIK to add a new graphics card. Next time you buy a laptop, look for one
that DOESN'T have shared VRAM (or whatever)- I believe ATI supplies
manufacturers with something called the Mobility chip.

It's quite possibly option d)... and it's probably allocated to the video
function. You could check it in the bios settings to confirm.

if it were "A" .. a more reliable way to check is to watch your computer
as it boots up (The BIOS info screen) - if the figure comes up as
262144KB ..... then your laptop has the correct amount of RAM.
as for "B" .. 192MB would be an odd number to install in a laptop. it
would require 2 sets of RAM to be installed, because you can't normally
get 192MB sticks. You'd have to have a 128MB stick and a 64MB stick or
something like that instead ... this would be an odd thing to do -
especially on a brand new laptop. (If the laptop has easy access to the
RAM slots, you could nip open the memory cover and see how many sticks
of RAM they've given you.. they'll probably have given you 1x256MB
stick)
"C" Would be possible .. although, more likely that the laptop would
experience other problems along with this (possibly beeping errors on
bootup, persistant crashing, BSOD in windows, etc etc)
Everyone else seems to have covered "D" .. and they're probably right...
it seems the most likely explanation.

It will only be option D if your looking at available RAM, if your looking
at the display for all RAM, then it could be any number of the other
possible options.
Do you know how many sticks of RAM or RAM slots their are inside your
laptop? because if its 4 slots thats 4 sticks of 64mb of RAM (making up
256mb in total (4x64)) which could mean only 3 of the slots have been
activated (3x64 = 192) in the systems BIOS, resulting in your loss of 64mb
ram (one stick in the 4th slot not being read due to that reason).
Alternativly it could be the fact you stated in Compaq screwing you on some
RAM, either way they are at fault and you should be able to claim something
back from them. If I was you, I would complain and kick up a fuss in any
situation because they have stiffed with the supposed 24/7 cover, so you
already have something to bargin with whatever the outcome is with your RAM.
Good Luck
