HL2 Gold Bogus?

That same account on HL2 Fallout was used to pre-announce the Counter
Strike: Source beta and the HL2 preload, and it was correct both times.
Nobody thought it was hacked after those announcements.

Interesting that after the HL2 gold announcement everyone suddenly thinks
the account has been hacked and the announcement bogus...

no one 'suddenly' thought the account was hacked. hl2fallout staff are
reporting that they have reason to believe it wasn't gabe, and they're
in the best position to know since they have access to the connection
logs.

After a close scrutiny of Gabe Newell's account history on the forums,
we've come to the conclusion that the gold post is a fake. While we can't be
100% certain at this stage, all indicators point towards someone hacking the
forum account. That said, all Gabe's previous posts on these forums are
quite legitimate.

We apologize for the confusion and will be investigating further.
Theoretically, an IPB forum account should be very difficult to hack. Well,
that was the theory at least. We'll keep you updated.

Actually it was quite funny.  Especially as his password was apparently
'gaben' (assuming that reports are true) which is probably even less secure
than 1234.

Like many things in life, we laugh because it's funny, and we laugh because
it's true

Well as Frode pointed out, it's got nothing to do with password. It was
lack of security on the site so by my defenition the humour is lost
immediatly.

I don't mind. Agree to disagree.

Er, the lack of security on the site was that Newell's password was easy to
guess.  (at least that's what I've been reading) Passwords are a form or
security.   If you're referring to Frode's post quoting:

"Theoretically, an IPB forum account should be very difficult to hack. Well,
that was the theory at least. We'll keep you updated."

Of course theoretically, experienced computer users should have the brains
to pick a password that won't be guessed easily.

I'm finding this whole situation hilarious.  I may just be twisted of
course. :-)

Now this makes all the sycophantic fanboy replies about ten times funnier.

Hey now! You better be glad most (all?) sycophantic fanboys don't know
what that means, or you'd be in serious trouble. Remember, Half-Life 2
is almost here (supposedly/hopefully), and the muppet squad will be in
here shortly thereafter, so you best be studying your dictionary for
even more long words, lest they catch you in a deadly game of "are not -
am too". You have been warned...

LOL, probably good advice.  How much is the full Oxford dictionary on DVD?

I received mail from EBGames where I have HL2 preordered.

"Thanks for pre-ordering from EBgames.com! As an added benefit to ordering from
us, well keep you informed of ship date changes. We are writing to let you know
that we have changed the projected ship date for Half-Life 2 to November, 1st
2004. The publisher did not provide us with a specific date so this is our best
estimate only and should not be considered firm. We will update this date again
as we receive new information."

The only part of that you should even remotely useful is:

They're guessing and what's more, you've probably got a better idea than
they do.

Without reference to the above ATI post and not wishing to fuel the fire of
speculation, I am heartened to see this post on an ATI web site.
