CS Source Beta - anyone else playing it in here?

Sloth - 20 Aug 2004 22:00 GMT I'll admit I'm still not entirely sold on the whole steam thing, after all the trouble it gave me when I first installed it (last year sometime? early version though). Updated about a month ago and things seem a lot better, and got the CS-CZ by download....(Only played the first couple of missions so far...)
Got the CS-Source Beta preload last night, and just finished playing a few rounds.... am impressed with the new source engine lots... and lots.... ok it doesn't add much to the gameplay of CS as a whole - but then again it wasn't meant too?
Graphics are good going on great (Farcry and Doom 3 beat em too it), pings good. (To the few servers I tried anyway), and the physics...
Played a few rounds in a empty server, shooting beer cans, and watching them rebound from the walls, and pushing/shooting barrels down the slopes in de_dust, then played in a full server for a few rounds. And got owned badly. Well, the barrels and cans didn't shoot back as often :)
There's also a timedemo included for the source engine.

Limnophile - 20 Aug 2004 22:24 GMT I tried CS: Source, and the graphics and physics were quite an improvement. The problem is that I have an older machine that can barely run it. For example, my PC runs CS 1.6 at 85 to 99 frames per second. It runs CS: Source at 6 to 8 fps. My latency on 1.6 is usually around 50-80 , but with CS: Source it's more like 240-300.
It's a big improvement, IF your computer is new enough to run it well.

Limnophile - 21 Aug 2004 13:09 GMT I played it on a Celeron 2.5 ghz with 768meg of 233 mhz ram, integrated intel extreme 3d graphics. Net connection is 3meg / 512 K cable modem. At least I have a 25 inch monitor, so I have peripheral vision like you wouldn't believe.. It looks good, and the physics are impressively realistic , too bad it runs so poorly.
CS 1.6 runs great, 80-99 fps on even the most demanding maps. So why do I only get 5-8 fps with Source ? 8 fps is nearly unplayable, and 5 .... ugh ... you don't wanna go there..

CS 1.6 is OpenGL (or D3D) and CSS is D3D only Probably Extreme Graphics 3 can handle it? Otherwise you need a D3D capable card
How is eg FraCry in comparison? (If you've played the game that is :)

Limnophile - 22 Aug 2004 00:04 GMT On my PC, the Far Cry demo runs at 3 fps.
Time for a new machine I guess...

Try a another GFX card first - integrated GFX boards are usually terrible, how about a second hand GF3 or GF4 (just don't get the MX series!), your processor is fast - even if it is a celeron, and your RAM is a bit slow, but you have plenty of it, I reckon that GFX card is slowing you down.
The original half-life plays fine on your rig because of the processor and ram, when HL first came out 3D cards were only starting to become mainstream, (I remember forking out loads of dosh for a voodoo 2 IIRC).
You will probably still struggle with cutting edge games based on new engines, source, farcry, doom3 - but at least you should be able to get into double figures FPS wise...

Good to see you back. Did you buy CS:CZ because it's only available by purchasing the game. I have seen a few 'hooky' versions but I've been unable to get these to work.
Which are you using?

Forget about putting a lot of strength in getting CSS to work The chance is currently fifty to fifty
We have it working on one box and the other it just crashes immediately Basically if it doesn't work dont' bother send in a bug report and wait for the next update
Besides that, the most amazing effect is the ragdoll thingie - wow
Other things worth mentioning We threw a nade in one occasion, landed near a tire - the nade went off and sent the tire to the head of an opponent, he went straight down...
We had a lot fun with the C4 bug last night, crazy stuff
Not much from the physics in action, you can should the barrels and put a nade under having them fly araound a bit - but they are unbreakable
The eyecandy IS nice even on a lowend card (9600 PRO)

If anyone can drop a URL to it, please do.
Sloth - 22 Aug 2004 00:21 GMT > Peter Lykkegaard proclaimed... > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > If anyone can drop a URL to it, please do. To answer your other post (Strider); yep I bought the game (condition zero), I wasn't going to bother but there haven't been many games of interest to me in the last few months, and condition zero got mediocre reveiws when it first came out (although I think it got pulled back and another development team redid a lot of the code..). Then I saw it had been redone, and owners of it got to play the CS:Source demo, and you can buy it online, and the fact I was pissed; with credit and computer, the rest as they say is history
:) As Peter says, seems pure luck at the moment how well it works, seems great to me, but other people can't even start it. But this is the Beta test, so the worst problems should be ironed out soon. There is only one map available at the moment (de_dust), and it plays pretty much like the original apart from the better graphics and physics effects. No Url - could email you some screenshots? If they havent changed the screenshot key - if there is one.

I bought a cycle coat for eighty squid for New Zealand even though I could get the same coat for sixty squid in England!

It's ok, I've downloaded lots of screenies and footage and it looks great. I didn't know there was only one map but I thought it funny and impressive that I didn't actually recognize de_dust even though it's anatomically correct :)
It's been a long fall from CS greatness :p
Lefty - 22 Aug 2004 01:25 GMT I found these screenshots for the groups' convenience.

I really like the modelling of the hands around the weapon. Much improved from CS.

Lefty - 22 Aug 2004 18:36 GMT I would'nt be *too* nervous. I find that the smallest advances in gaming and graphics in particular are always blown way out of proportion. Take the pic with the bottles in it for example; http://img12.exs.cx/img12/3438/de_dust0002.jpg The bottles themselves look absolutely great. Take them away, and the remaining texture has very little actual detail, just like original CS (although the hands are somewhat improved). *Real* world textures are'nt easy to duplicate.

Does anybody remember (or still have a link to) the guy that made a MOD which was basically original HL, but he used .jpegs of his family, and put their heads on Barney, Gordon and the other characters? He posted here for a short while promoting the MOD. He had some screenies and a couple demos put together. It was hilarious and equally disturbing at the same time.

No, but I do remember taking a photo of myself and grafting it onto a DM model. It was quite good because in the picture I had this great smile and it the model came across all maniacal. :)

Civilian_Target - 23 Aug 2004 09:09 GMT > The eyecandy IS nice even on a lowend card (9600 PRO) Lowend my foot. So far, I've only been able to try it on a AMD 1800XP GF4MX. The frame rate was passable, about 40fps, but it's wasn't pretty..... The physics were good, but i didn't play for long. Overall, it's a step forward, not a leap, on normal CS. Hopefully its still very much a beta....

GF4MX = Lowend (cheap card thats still manufactured) TNT2 = Backend(cheap old card that you can't get anymore)

Oh btw my new laptop has the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with shared memory Crap I was hoping for an ATI or NVidia - but that'll be pushing my luck a little too hard :-) Afterall I am upgrading from the ATI Rage
Cheers/- Peter

The family's machine has the GF4MX, mine have a GF4Ti but unfortunatly I'm a motherboard short at the moment, so its not much good to me...
