I'd like to get HL2 running on my second computer, it's a newer
Emachines.  On board video, and no AGP slot.  I do have a PCI voodoo2
laying around.  Any idea if it will work?

Paul will consider you a hero and raise a small statue of you, if you
succeed.  :D

I'd say there's not a chance in hell (what drivers are you going to use)?  Good
luck though!

I may be wrong, but I think Valve have said that the graphics card must have
hardware T&L as a minimum.  No 3dfx card has that.

Isn't that a 16mb card?  I think I had one, I know I have a Voodoo 1 and a
Voodoo 3 at one point.  Even if it worked, it would have to really suck
wind.  I'm thinking a better 64mb card might do in the right machine.  After
watching the trailer, it'll be more akin to Farcry, rather than Halo.  Based
on same I'm thinkin you'll want 128, but could live with 64.  Lots of
variables unknown of course.  mabey 64 aint gonna cut it.

There are voodoo2 drivers for XP.  And what is T&L?

So if the V2 really won't work, are there any other inexpensive
options?  Some other older (as in cheap-on-ebay) PCI 3d card?

Thanks,

T&L is "Transform & Lighting", without which the shaders in the source
engine wouldn't work, (shaders AFAIK are an integral part of the Engine)

at the moment, you can pick up a decent ATI Radeon 9600 Pro for about
£70 brand new ... by the time the game comes out it may be less, since
the next gen of ATI cards are already on the market..  I expect you
could find them on ebay aswell.

Does it have a PCI version?

(I paid double that for mine, thanks for reminding me)

>There are voodoo2 drivers for XP.  And what is T&L?

But do they work? When I upgraded my old P2-400 system to be my 'internet'
machine and installed Windows XP Pro, I found some drivers on an Italian
Voodoo(2) fan site, which claimed to work.

I never got them to work, and finally pulled out the Voodoo2-SLI setup,
and put the cards, with a tear in my eye ;), back in their boxes.

But possibly the situation has changed by now? So I'm interested in any
information you have regarding this...?

Regards, Patrick.

Interesting... Which ones are the best/most stable/etc, because there are
several options available for Voodoo2/XP?

Patrick.

T&L is transform & lighting, I think it started with the GF2 series?

The original Geforce was the first hT&L card.  Transform and lighting didn't
start with the geforce, it was simply done by the CPU.

Are capable of running a SLI configuration on the voodoo(s)?

Btw this looks interesting if you decide to upgrade your rig

SLI means they are at the top of technology at the moment, the only way to
increase speed being to use two cards.

Fancy, expensive, but likely to be out of date before 'old skool' systems
stop being useful and the new tech comes out.

That doesnt mean I would want one :P

Incidentally, if it's a newer machine, won't the onboard video be better than a
Voodoo2?

I think it's an Intel Extreme Graphics, with up to 64 MB of shared
memory.  I guess I'll just try it when it comes out and see.  I
preordered it (HL2) last weekend.
