Decided to try Half Life, downloaded the demo only to find a swampfull of
weird problems. First, I have to download some sort of installer -- makes
sort of sense -- but then when I click it it tells me it can't find a
certain video file.

Is it possible to get a working copy of the demo for XP?

Thanks!

It's a good game man.  Just buy it, It's like 20 bucks or less now and if
you buy the deluxe pack you get Counter strike and Team fortress 2 I
believe.

it's TFC.. not TF2 :-)  hehe, else we'd -all- be buying the deluxe pack ;)

There's not much point in buying the deluxe pack for CS and TFC - since
he'd have to download the full installers of them both to actually use
them anyway (They are free mods).  CS Retail doesn't usually install
properly if you already have HL installed - better to get the Mod
version, and TFC gets included with all the HL patches anyway.

Well, I did just buy the Half-Life basic (monster killing starter set) and
installed it just a few moments ago.

I'll give it a shot, so to speak, and I 'spect you may find me here asking
a few lame questions. :)

Thanks to all,

Hope you enjoy it :)  we all did!    if you feel you may be asking a
lame question that's been asked a million times before, check the post
from David Firewater titled AGHL FAQ .. it contains links to all sorts
of useful HL info to get you going..  otherwise, post the lame question
anyway, and one of us will probably answer :)

Well, here's one under the help getting started column. Still trying to
decide if the game and I are meant for each other.

Checking out various FAQS and walkthroughs to help me get started in the
2nd area, the Unforseen Consequences. Need to get a sense of how the
game works and hit a wall that totally zonked me. For those who remember
this early level, I'll cut to the chase -- you hop up on the fallen
computers and through the AC vent into an area with two rooms -- one has
a guy in it you can see fighting ? with an alien. The second room opens,
revealing an alien in the chair. The only way from there is a locked
door that won't open.

So, the second room is no problem. The room where I see the scientist
won't open but a crack. The doorway won't open to allow me to go on from
there. All the FAQ/Walkthroughs I see go into some enthusiastic riff
about a metal door on your right, a ladder that goes up, shooting
cylindars, etc.

That layout is *no*where to be found.

Any suggestions or specifics are appreciated. Once I get on frequency
with this thing it looks good, but I"m a long way from that point.

Best,

DrM

First off, if you want to enjoy the game, lose the walk through....
Use your brain and instincts... Look around, explore and find things
and places,,, It's a great game if you do it on your own as all of us
have.... If you use  a walk through you've wasted a few bucks and will
gain no satisfaction.....

The metal door, ladder and cylinders are just past the place where you're
stuck.

The first door leading out of that area won't open, but that doesn't mean
that you can't get through it anyway.
If you want more specific instructions, just post back.

I don't think so.  But the full game works fine on XP when patched - you
won't regret buying it, and it's dirt cheap these days.
