Man, if you people want to play this game you are going to have to get your
brains going.

username is: V****       ?

So, what do the numbers represent in the password?

No idea.

No idea what to do next either, but it probably has something to do with the
fancy ASCII-art in the HTML source...
:)

How would I know it had ASCII-art if I didn't?

Err.. how do you view the source?  MSIE and Nutscrape both just ask me
for a username & password if i try to view the source, then give me
'authentification failed'...

W????n : are you gonna give us the username/password to see this thing
or not? :)

Oh, I thought we were past that stage.  He gave us the password, and the
username is a five-letter word associated with Half-Life beginning with 'V' and
ending in 'e'.  Not hard.

You get a website with a picture of the G-Man that tells you that you passed the
first test, and as far as I can see, that's all.  The HTML source has easter
eggs, which may be clues on how to proceed.  I tried a few obvious things, but
got bored.  This is not a very interesting game.

What "easter eggs?"

I see something else.

And as I stated, looks like vALVE is just having some fun. I believe there
is more to come, however.  : )

HL2 is almost HERE!!!!!!!!

Weird! When i tried that earlier, it didn't work, but it just worked now
:) ... neat ASCII art...  But i don't know exactly how one was supposed
to "complete the first test" without being given the user/password...
where do the clues come from?

I don't see what else there is to continue with, there's no links or
anything like that...  not very interesting indeed.

Small 'n' in the password doesn't work, you have to use 'N'.  Maybe that's where
you went wrong (I did).

... neat ASCII art...  But i don't know exactly how one was supposed
> to "complete the first test" without being given the user/password...
> where do the clues come from?

I figured that you were supposed to be enough of a l33t h4X0R to figure out the
username & password without clues.  The username is guessable, but until W????n
explains what he's going on about, the password will remain a mystery to most of
us.  Where did the link come from anyway?  Maybe that's where the clues are.

> I don't see what else there is to continue with, there's no links or
> anything like that...  not very interesting indeed.

Well, since the message says "first test", logic suggests that there is a second
one.  The first one wasn't exactly obvious, so I thought the second test might
be similar hidden, e.g. in the HTML or CSS.

the HTML code contains Gordon's head drawn in ASCII art.

It is Gordons impression painted on an Easter Egg done as ASCII Art

They were written on a whiteboard at Valve, where a load of
fans/journos got a visit recently. Valve obviously knew they'd take
pictures of *everything*, so set a simple puzzle for the fans. They
didn't take into account that the dummies wouldn't photograph the whole
board, and therefore they missed part of the password. One sheepish
email to Valve later, the big secret was revealed...

And you have to be 133t to know what pwn3d means, I gather.

Simply turn it upside down, and it obviously reads... um... "peumd".

Now, what do the numbers mean. It has to do with HL2's "setting."

User name posted already.

The numbers in the password are a little tougher.

Neil Jones is close with the grid reference.

I did not say this was "thee" HL2 game, by the way.

Just something vALVE   has put out for some reason.

Close? They point to somewhere in Russia if read as a grid reference.
I'd almost say I'd be interested to know what *else* they do, but...
I'm not.

Having read some of the messages on the Halflife2.net noticeboard, I
have to say that a) no-one can come in here and accuse *us* of being
'fanbois' any more, and b) they're really not that smart. They had to
email Valve for the password!

A.I. it ain't...

Weird? halflife2.net is a fan website, not a VUgames website.
